Problem here is people can't connect the lines and look outside the box. It comes from easy answers and not much thinking. He was chosen due to his background from working on the film.
He was found out and received a lot of rude calls when he was still in the L.A. office of Universal after the original airing of the film in syndication. It was a very hard time for him especially since his mother had just passed away.

It's amazing really how rude and snobbish not to mention the amount of ego compared to intellect I see here from people who presume to knowing so much. It one of the main reasons I got out of doing what I did due to the lack of gratitude towards the work that should provide entertainment to so many. The amount of rudeness and assumptions founded in lack of experience and based only on "internet poking" is harsh and plain stupid. It is truly a miracle when Special Edition of any release comes out shinning of quality in both PQ and bonus materials. There is such a hurdle to over come in terms of materials available, studio bull-shit, and yes, fans who expect too much for the budget confines and bureaucracy to wade through to get any sort of quality out to the public. I did it for over 30 years, starting with Beta/VHS to Laser, then DVD and finally Blu-ray. I can validate what I've done and what I've worked on. My professional profile is on LinkedIn. I don't take kindly to being snubbed by snots who have achieved nothing more than posts backed by ego. I worked hard and fought a lot for quality releases and restorations. These forums are supposed to be a place to share acquired knowledge to the betterment and further enjoyment of what we all love - not a pole to crucify.

I've learned in life consideration is the key to all, especially respect.

The only deleted scenes from Dune that I really think would've been useful in the theatrical cut are the one between Shadout Mapes and Lady Jessica, and the one with Thufir from the end where his heartplug comes out. The rest of it isn't so good...or at least the way it is in the extended TV version.

Another one I felt should have stayed was Paul's fight with Jamis. In the theatrical cut the Fremen just accept Paul after he's done nothing but knock Jamis down. IMHO it's a plot hole in the theatrical cut.

It really isn't in case anyone here is planning to blind-buy the mini-series!

It's not better than the film, but it makes for a great mini-series.

+1. Definitely. That's the bit I miss the most. And the battle scenes at the end of the film are longer too (they are so obviously edited in the Theatrical cut!)

In my opinion, if you love Lynch's Dune then be wary of the mini series. I believe the best term to describe it would be meh

So I take it the U.S. Universal BD has the best transfer of the film?

I saw a Universal BD for the film over here but apparently the transfer is the same as the terrible German one.

Yes, it is superior to all other BD releases of the film including the FR and DE discs.

Look, to be fair, that's not what you said when you first posted. You said:

...thus giving people the impression that you believe Alan Smithee exists and was hired to take on the task of the Dune TV edit.

So of course people are going to step in and correct you. As far as respect... well, it goes both ways. You don't know me, my age or my background, so I resent the implication that I wasn't around when the film came out, or that I don't know what I'm talking about, simply because I call you out on faulty facts.

Yep, it's region free and has all of the extras from the 2006 steelbook DVD. The only extra not included is the trivia track that is found on the original 1998 DVD.

You're certainly allowed your opinion, but just like mine, it's only an opinion. There is a large following that disagrees with you......

Yes hopefully, I am still trying to find someone that actually owns Children of Dune, I know the French version of that one was 1080i, and from the few reviews on Amazon.fr, it wasn't a great looking transfer. The German version was released about a year ago, but so far no one has reviewed it, or really commented on the PQ of the disc.

I will gladly import both if the transfers are decent, the chances of this getting a US release are slim to none at this point. Now watch after posting this it gets announced 6-9 months from now and I wind up sucking on my size 13 shoes, LOL.

You can get the extended cut on DVD from Thailand actually.

It's literally the flip side of the Us DVD and only contains the TV version is scope with 5.1 audio. Comes with a slipcase as well

Paid about £4 for it shipped to the UK from ethaicd.com

The French Premuim edition DVD contains the only know version of the TV cut (on DVD) which is split into two parts as it was originally broadcast.

I'm currently building my Dune collection so little odditys like these get researched and picked up when I can find them

Good! I tried to like the mini-series when I saw it all ages ago but I swiftly went back to Lynch's Dune. Yeah the mini-series may be more accurate to the book but it cant begin to compete with Lynch's Dune in all sorts of ways like cast, sets, music , visuals etc...

You should be able to pick it up cheap at amazon.co.uk I think - pretty sure thats what I did. Dont buy the UK Dune! You have been warned!

It does have completely different extras from the US one though I think. So it may be worth picking up for that reason - plus it has a nice slipcover (not sure about now mind) and it should be very cheap too.

I know you are gonna go ballistic over this but I think the French is better simply because the print is MUCH cleaner than the US version. Yes the contrast is boosted, but that is easily fixed by turning your contrast down.

I guess it depends what you prefer and I prefer a cleaner print.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree on that one. Have a look while you're thinking about it: http://caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleich...less=1#auswahl
