I don't think that it's common knowledge, because I don't think that it's true - at least it hasn't been up to at least a few months ago in my experience. I've returned a few items purchased with rewards, and the Circle earnings went back to my balance immediately. If they changed their policy, I'd love to know about it, because I'd want to be more careful about what I use my Circle earnings to purchase.

If you return something that you purchased in a promotion that earned points (like spend $90 four times...) then they do remove the reward, but that's not (I think) what you're talking about.

^ I concur. I have always gotten rewards refunded when doing a return. But if the purchase qualified me for a bonus, and I make the return, then I lose the bonus... I made that mistake once...

I think you're all on to something here. Now when I check my Circle app it's showing $45 in available rewards. It's strange that both employees at customer service and a manager all told me that I'd simply lose the $45, I guess they are all misinformed at that store. Then again this is the store that has said they won't price match Amazon if an item is "Prime"

I don't think it's surprising that not all employees know what's going on at their own stores. Many years ago a Target Cartwheel deal wouldn't activate and a manager said to me Cartwheel wasn't Target.

I worked there over a decade ago and there was zero training whatsoever, both for cashier and guest services. They just put you there and tell you to figure it out as you go.

That said, if you get it wrong... you're gonna hear about it. So you can't really blame cashiers for being cautious.

We had one team lead that loooooved pulling employees in the custodial or photo lab closets and screaming at them whenever they got something wrong. It was a pretty toxic place to work.
