But how well the codecs have been utilized does. So comparing two pirated copies is worthless.

Not necessarily. I'm somewhat busy with encoding and recoding homevideos from our holiday trips and I can take a 480p picture, recode it to a 1080p by upscaling it and thus arrive at a 1080p picture that has less detail than a native 720p picture that was filmed with a handheld camera with that resolution.

Another thing to take into consideration is bitrate. A native 1080p picture that has been compressed considerably will still be 1080p but will have a much lower bitrate and as a result, color and detail will suffer.

So it's not always a black-white case where one can say that any 1080p picture is equal and can be compared to any 720p or 480p picture.

In general, I've noticed that the best way to do a 'clean' comparison is to take the DVD, upscaled through my PS3 and compare than to the Blu-ray. Or, using a Vaio notebook, to play the DVD with PowerDVD and then play the Blu-ray the same software. That way, you get correct 1:1 comparisons.

Outstanding! Still nothing in my email, it'll show up here eventually. I briefly considered going back to the site and reregistering, but then decided against it. They probably got a ton of registrations the day Avatar was released and it's gonna take a little time to sort all that out, I'm sure

Yesterday at work, a coworker and I were talking about Avatar, and then this idiot that got fired, the day before. Anyway, my coworker, she called the guy a skxawng, which means moron, in Na'vi. Thought it was pretty funny, and just had to share that with y'all.

Don't believe everything you read on Wikipedia. I am a scientist by trade and I have never once heard of anything refered to as "unobtanium"... Not in the four years while I was in college (BS chemistry) and not in my 3 years of job experience either. I think I'd have to laugh if I actually ever heard anyone mention it in any kind of serious setting. I guess it's possible that I've just missed it but it's not likely considering my background.

Other than that, this was a great movie. If that's my biggest complaint then Cameron has done fairly well

Maybe you need 150" inch to see the difference.
or maybe you need new projector ....

and that fairy tale about downloading pirate version just to check ?

there is no way that 1080p and 720 are practically same,... no way..

Also, a guy posted that Sharp(my player) had just posted a fix for 1-2 models...I checked and mine is NOT one of them. Which means, the day I get mine in mail and pop into BD tray, I know I'm set up to fail for viewing it w/o issues. So, I'm poised to call/email them ASAP to get them in gear.......*sigh*. So Sony, decidedly sent Panasonic the piracy codes in an exclsive backroom deal, leaving all other manufacturers scrambling to deal w/ the fall out from their customers...on well over 2 million copies failing to operate? THANKS SONY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hello,

This is not true and you know this very well, from the first time when you pop up your AVATAR BD,a new firmware update is needed. If Sharp doesn't provide an update for your specific blu-ray player it is their problem.1st of all you can call Sharp support and tell them .Second, you can search blu-ray players section and found a solution if does exist.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/blu-ray-pl...w-threads.html

Sharp

DV-BP1

BD-HP21

Sweet! Leaves more room for the quality of the actual movie.

It's actually a real English word. I first heard it myself I guess over 10 years ago, and I hear it here and there. Just because you havent doesnt mean its not a word. Alas, not every person knows every word in the english language. Not a single one of you has ever heard every word in this constantly growing language.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/unobtanium

And its no surprise you havent heard it, this word isnt specific to science. It can be used for anything that is very difficult to obtain.

since the source is digital it would be the same quality if its ripped from the original source. 1's and 0's never change.
