Plenty of films shoot day for night. Lighting being the biggest issue among other things already mentioned.

I've used day for night on one short project of mine and was happy with how it turned out. And I plan to use a lot more day for night, whenever I make a horror film of mine. It'll make shooting that much more efficient as well.

And watching making behind the scenes documentaries. I'm surprised by how bright sets are lit, even when they take place in dark settings in the final cut. So lots of post production picture tweaking goes on to adjust the brightness levels in films of all budgets.

For example, I'm slowly making my way through the Rob Zombie Halloween documentary. And it's interesting seeing the bright, normal color set shots, with the dark, blue and so forth colors of the final print. Since I assumed they were shot in dimmer settings, but that's not the case.

I also watched Halloween:H20 recently, and I'm pretty sure the very final scene is day for night, based on how the colors and shade from the trees looked.

When filming, you generally want everything brightly lit and relatively "flat" looking, especially when you're filming at night. This ensures you at least have high quality, attractive looking footage that's relatively flexible and easy to work with in post. It opens up a ton of options when you do color correction and grading. If something is poorly lit or too shadowy, it can seriously handcuff your film. Instead of spending valuable post time creating a certain look, you wind up wasting hours trying to save footage and fixing basic stuff to get something merely serviceable. You can take light out of a video, but you can't really add it back in.

I lost interest a long time ago especially since SF doesn't seem to give a ****. This release looks horrible and looks overly brightened beyond belief.

So if I am a big werewolf movie lover and was going to blind-buy this, what should I get instead? Looking on US Amazon it seems the old BD is out of print.

I picked up a copy on eBay for less than $20, including shipping. I haven't watched it all the way through though, and it might not be any better than the DVD. I think some Amazon sellers have it for less than $20 too. I've heard the picture quality on the UK DVD is best (and it looks pretty good on DVDBeaver), but I'm not a fan of PAL speedup, so I just grabbed the blu-ray. If you're going to get it, I wouldn't wait too long. It wouldn't surprise me at all if sales (and prices) started increasing once more people hear about the SF release.

Seems there's still 9 (new) discs from the 2009 First Look Home Entertainment release available:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001RXDLZA?ie=UTF8&tag=blurayport-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=1638&creative=6742&creativeAS IN=B001RXDLZA

Otherwise, you could go with a used UK-DVD import, about $5 plus $16 for shipping.

BTW when I mentioned The Descent earlier, someone rightly commented the Aussie release was way to go - For anyone interested, EDIT: I just learned the US rel. has the alternate ending and the original, thought they skipped it. Recommend sticking to the OG ending then.

The US disc has both endings for The Descent. The Aussie release may be better, but this has nothing to do with that.

I wouldn't have paid $20.00 for Dog Soldiers in the first place because, the movie itself is not worth it to me. You should've been glad that Twilight Time didn't released Dog Soldiers for $35.00, then you (and everybody else) would've been really pissed.

It's certainly a different look for the film.

I can't say I love it, but there's still a tiny part of me that wants to see it in motion.

I know, I know.

If there was any added detail in the image over the UK DVD, I'd agree with you, but there's not. This is one of the very few times I'll say it: "The DVD is better than the blu-ray(s)." So far.

inb4 there was a big mix-up in that they're accidentally using an older BD master that used the older materials as opposed to the new master that utilized the new materials (Which is plausible since this BD had been apparently delayed for quite a while now).

Either that or SF totally lied to us and had no intention to using a new transfer in the first place.

Do you think Shout Factory or any other distributor is going to invest a lot of money in a extremely low budget film like Dog Soldiers, trying to make it look like a $120,000,000 production? It's not going to happen.

If I recall correctly, the director found better film elements a couple of months back, so I swore that those were to be utilized for this particular blu-ray release and was the reason for it being delayed.

Perhaps he did, but SF chose not to use his new print anyhow and decided to use an altered version of the original print that they were going to use in the first place, which would be quite disappointing.

Maybe a new transfer will surface on a new UK blu-ray release or something.

The remaining discs at amazon.com are currently $17-18 including shipping, but agreed that prolly won't be for much longer.

But how do you know if the director was telling the truth or not? And if so, then Shout Factory would've needed the approval, and probably required to pay an extra amount of money to use the new print (if there is one), which they didn't want to do.
