Val Kilmer looks frail; hope he's OK.

The other couple shots that first come to mind are the shot of Hanna's hand on Hugh Benny's face before he pushes him through the window and the close up on Waingro when McCauley pistol whips him in the nose in the hotel room. Almost looks like Mann was holding a little handheld camera over de Niro's shoulder. |

Well, not exactly, but I just think it's really close to the best it can look because of nature of cinematography. It's a soft and murky movie. Grain is perfectly fine, I don't see much manipulation. And it's looks pretty detailed in contrast scenes and on close-ups.
There's a movie Martha Marcy May Marlene, it really reminded me of Heat in terms of cinematography. It's a new movie made with good equipment, but it's just as soft and murky and looks similar clarity-wise to current BD of Heat. |

Oh indeed, but the catch here is that we're not talking about some steam-driven old telecine, as to my eyes the Heat Blu-ray already looks like a modern scan, complete with teal and everything!

![]() The AC3 laserdisc had a little more punch, other than that I thought the Blu was fine. But as Dalton would say: opinions vary. |

Has this ever been encoded in DTS HD-MA audio before? Obviously it will be for the new release since Fox does everything in that, but I don't believe there's ever been a domestic release of it in that format. Certainly not on DVD/Blu anyway.
I wonder what, if any new extras will be on the new disc. The commentary and video pieces from the 2005 release were enlightening and fairly extensive. I'd hope the Oscar Q&A in full, and maybe the one in Toronto last year will be included. Hopefully more behind-the-scenes footage from filming, and a more deeper look at the technical aspects like the cinematography, editing, music, etc. |

If the audio pitch remains the same on the new release, whether it's a 4K remastered 1080p blu ray or the UHD release, I would still use my Japanese disc when I wanted to watch the movie. Because the current release still looks good (with the Japanese having a slightly superior encode), but the audio difference between the two is quite noticeable between the Warner and Japanese discs. And this is coming from someone who isn't exactly an audiophile and cheap audio equipment. I would use the Japanese version because of the shootout scene alone because it's a whole different experience. It's the only blu ray release that I've ever double dipped on (and I've double dipped quite a few times) where I would say the audio difference is massive and alone enough to get the other release. I'm sure that the new video won't be enough to outweigh the audio difference, should it remain the same on this new release. Now the first release of The Terminator with original LPCM mono vs the newer 4K remastered release with crappy newly mixed audio - that would be a tricky decision to determine which one outweighed the other.... |

Heat is not necessarily the main issue here, but it struck me that I now own two copies of Star Trek II, Goodfellas, and replaced Rocky and Fargo, not to mention waited to buy remastered discs like Total Recall, Robocop, The Terminator, and--probably--Terminator 2. It's frustrating that studios didn't release these remastered discs to begin with, but then again, I wouldn't have purchased two Blu-rays instead of one... Anyway, looking forward to picking up Heat!

Sorry to repeat myself but I do hope that Mann and the powers-that-be come to their senses and release the original cinema cut. I would think Mann would agree to that for posterity but then he doesn't seem to give a sh*t about that.
