This cover has been popping up on some Scandinavian webshops today. I don't know if it is the official or not.

As much as I want the first movie I am not buying a individual release no excuse not to also release a box set of all the films on UHD

Not a fan of the cover (if it's real), but it's not the most important thing.

Honestly looks like someone took some possible upcoming Steelbook art and used it as a temp cover. A little too stylized to be the final cover, I'd like to believe.

Cover idea (would look BA on a steelbook)... a sentinel coming at you with some of the arms/tentactles embossed around the entire cover!!! Oh yeahhhhh!!!!!

In terms of the characters.. the cover has to be Neo, and Neo alone, in my humble opinion.

Man this makes me think of the sentinel figure that I have in storage (in my mom's house many states away), and the set of movie posters that were double sided... I think they were from reloaded though.

I was hoping the covers would be in the style of the Dark Knight individual UHD covers, Neo on the first, Trinity on the second, Morpheus on the third... Black, rain pouring, them standing on a splashy rain soaked street, backgrounds with a lot of bokeh (that iconic under the bridge wide shot blurred behind Neo on the first cover) and so on, but whatever. That's just what I was imagining; they'll obviously be doing it differently.

If that cover above is real then at least they chose some of the only good character poses of all the promotional material for the first movie.

I feel like I may have to watch the Matrix tonight... but i have so many other movies that have not even been opened yet! Well, not too many, but enough where I think - why am I buying all of this haha.

The bridge scene - do you mean when they stop in the car and remove the bug?

Oh right, when they first pick him up. So much symbolism in this movie, that I think if I watched now I would have a much better understanding of it than my 15-17 year old self.

I would prefer a standalone release, at least as an option, because I'm not a big fan of 2 & 3, and don't want to have to pay an extra $40 just to get number one.

You should consider watching the documentary "Philosophy and the Matrix - Return to the Source" that was included in the film's home video release. It's also available online for free on Vimeo.

I hope not. Trinity never uses an UZI until Reloaded. Neo and Morpheus are just pulled off the the film's poster. I know because I have four original posters for the trilogy.

It's Micro Uzi and she uses it in the lobby scene.

Was i completely mistaken in thinking this?

Also, were the sequels only a partial di (the highway scene in reloaded) and photochemical for everything else? The dvd transfers of the sequels exhibited what i would call “filmic anomalies” like gateweave, even in shots that looked 100% cg.
Fellowship was a good couple of years later though, a lot of the timing in that movie was done digitally and then filmed out even though it didn't have a full DI for the theatrical release as you say. But in 1999 they were still only using the digital grading to achieve specific colouring effects e.g. 1998's Pleasantville and IIRC it simply wasn't need on Matrix '99. No mention of any digital grading in the AC article, like for the green tint Bill Pope mentions them using gels on the lights on set and then playing with it during the photochemical grading.

FWIW:

Matrix 3 was presumably all photochemical as there's no indication in the AC article that it got a select DI pass.

So yeah, me saying that only the first was done photochemically is horse-hooey. All THREE were, so perhaps Warners are taking the 4K remastering one movie at a time.

So we’re looking at a Minority Report kind of situation, then? A Super 35 production with filmed-out vfx shots that will need to be scanned back in? Would the DI files of the relevant scenes in Reloaded have been saved somewhere or would the filmed out negative be the best source for that material as well?

In all three cases the whole thing will exist as a conformed negative just like with any photochemically-finished show that's got filmed-out VFX. Warners are usually pretty good at preserving their assets so the DI for the freeway chase should've been vaulted, but whether they will return to the source (heh) when putting together Reloaded's UHD transfer only they will know. One hopes that they will at least do tests for that scene and compare an upscale of the 2K DI to a 4K scan of the film-out material.

This is definitely an exciting one, though I do find it odd they’re not opting for a trilogy box set, or at the very least three standalone releases at the same time.
