Another question - if I recruit everyone I possibly can recruit I can imagine your party getting quite large. Is it the case that most story-related characters stay with you or do they come and go (no spoilers, please!).
No...any of them can leave at any time (maybe except for the dog) depending on the decisions you make and how high your approval ratings is.

On my first playthrough I lost about 1/3 of my party by the end of the game.

Interesting. Do they take their equipment with them?

yes...I was pretty upset to see my Juggernaut Armor walk away. lol. i recommend you save often just in case you make a decision that you end up regretting later. I can't even count how many times I started over with this game.

That's really good to know, thanks again.

I have some more questions for you guys (it never stops!):
1) For the most part, will characters stay with you if your approval rating with them is positive?
2) Does everyone have a special gift you can give them that they're partial too? I gave Leiliana the andrasian rose/flower and it prompted a little mini-dialogue and gave me a +19 approval rating.
3) what are the best ways to build approval with teammates besides through dialogue?

1. There are certain plot events that will make certain charcters leave if they happen. But they wont just flake out and leave for no reason.

2. Most if not all of the party has one or 2 special gifts that will prompt a dialogue. Also certain gifts have a greater affect. For instance, jewelry gives Morrigan +6 to +10, while it gives others +1. Everyone has a theme of gifts that they really like.

3. See above. Also, doing their side quest really helps, Morrigans mom, Allisters sister, Lelliannas old mentor ect.

Cool, that really helps. Now, to figure out what type of gift each person likes!

P.S. This game is "ruining" my life!

I don't really know where to ask this so I'll ask here. Christmas is coming up and my brother loves RPG's. I bought him Oblivion last Christmas and he has played it non stop until I bought him Demon's Souls.

Do I buy this game or Borderlands as the next RPG?

Thanks guys.

I don't know about Borderlands, but I'm loving this game. It's like Oblivion in many ways so I'm sure he'll love it. Borderlands seems more like an open-ended FPS with RPG elements.

Lillianna likes religous stuff, anything that says andresta.
Morrigan likes jewelry.
Allisters likes statues
Zervran likes bits of armor, gloves/boots ect. You can google for a complete list.

Everytime you give a gift to a person, it becomes less and less effective. (i.e. you give zeveran a gold bar it'll be a +10, give him a sliver bar +9, next one +8)

I'm not sure how low ratings would have get but honestly I don't think it will ever get to that point. None my characters have gone below the halfway mark. The ones I lost were single game changing decisions. Another way to improve your approval rating is complete their side story. All your allies have a side story.

I been playing this game forever. Part of me is sick of it, but another part of me keeps coming back for more. I still haven't even opened Assassin Creed 2 or Modern Warfare 2 yet. lol.

Out of the three characters, I seems to like the Rogue the best. there's so much variety being a rogue. First time I played I was a dual swords guy. Now I find myself sneaking around laying traps and watch them go off. It's pretty fun. There should be a way for you to make lots of money. I'm spending all my money on traps. lol.

I don't consider Borderlands a RPG. If he likes Oblivion I would say get this game. Get Borderlands if he likes running around shooting at enemies all day long. I have put over 100+ hrs on this game and I still can't get enough. lol.

Thanks Beefbowl and Black mamba. Based on the fact that he loved Oblivion and what you guys are mentioning, I'll get this game for him.

@Beefbowl. There is a cheat to dupe items. You can dupe tomes and sell them for a ton of cash. It would only take a few minutes to make over 1000g.

Good call.

Borderlands would be an incredible disappointment for him most likely.

Ya that's what I realized when I remembered I bought him Fallout 3 and he really didn't play it that much.

How do you do that? Not sure if I want to use this, but better to have it and not use it then the other way around.

The same way you do the infinite money glitch. Put an item in junk and push both "sell all junk" and "sell" at the same time. Buy both items back.

Gifts:

Alistair - Runestones and Statuettes
Dog - Bones
Leliana - Religious and shoes
Morrigan - Appearance items(necklaces and the like) and Demonic items
Oghren - Alcohol(except for Wine)
Shale - Remarkable gems
Shen - Paintings
Wynne - Books, Wine
Zevran - Raw metals
"That other companion" - Maps

Note: These are approximate, there's a couple of "Appearance" type items that are universal for example.

Default Spoiler Tags PLEASE, PLEASE!

Please, if you will, use spoiler tags! The help is much, much appreciated, but sometimes we don't all want it at the same time.

I have Borderlands and found it a huge disappointment, and that is the reason I am playing this game, now. It has not story, and it is very monotonous. The graphics quality is very low. A tad better than Road Runner/Coyote cartoons. In my spare time, I'm trying to collect Dead Space trophies rather than play Borderlands. It is nothing like Fallout 3, which I found just as addicting as DA:O.

I'm really bummed, though, that I can't take my DA:O save games from one machine to another. I wanted to play today, and hang out with my birds, who live upstairs. So I ended up frustrating myself shooting asteroids in Dead Space all morning.

By the way, I'm a little bit disappointed with Wynne. I let Morrigan go in exchange for her. I lost a lot of offensive magical power, and I'm still using a lot of potions for healing. Maybe I just suck at this game, too!
