Anyone else watch this? Thoughts? I felt it was a marginal upgrade over the blu-ray I have already. Its got nice film grain and everything is "fine". I just didnt feel it was an eye-opening upgrade.
This might be the last older catalog title I buy. Just not being wowed by 4K treatments of these older titles like I am with newer titles and nature stuff like planet earth 2 or whatever. |

![]() Like I said above - Im just not going to be rebuying that many older catalog titles in 4K. Rather use the money towards newer stuff or other things. Standard blu-rays still look terrific on my OLED. |

I'm amazed at how great normal blus look on my new telly as well. I still get jaw-dropping moments on recent releases like Fish Called Wanda, Children of the Corn and Cult of Chucky. Couldn't say that about DVD after the movie to HD.

After jumping some hoops, I FINALLY have a 4K slipcover...and yes, it truly is a sight to behold in person.
Glad to have finally remedied that wrong after my original Mastered in 4K blu-ray was bought without its respective slipcover. |

I purchased mind copy from Bullmoose (highly recommend this place) and it came with a slip although that didn't matter to me.
I watched the disc last night and spent almost an hour A/Bing scenes from the UHD BD to the Mi4K BD that came with it. First off, I have to say the UHD BD looked outstanding. Any fan of this movie understands the source and limitations of such of the film as there is inherent softness although some scenes can look reasonable sharp and detailed. The UHD BD really allows the transparency of the film to take hold as the HDR opens up better shadow in darker scenes compared to the BD. For example, scenes at the end of the movie with Mina's black hair against the dark background are rather hard to distinguish with the BD where they don't look crushed, but pretty close to such; but they are well defined separately on the UHD BD. This was apparent throughout the entire movie where everything looks very natural and throughout. I really like how well and subtly the HDR was implemented and it probably mirrors the original film's higher dynamic range compared to the more limited SDR of the BD. With that said, it struck me at just how good the BD was done. From a sheer detail standpoint, I didn't see much of an uptick with the UHD BD except in terms of more significantly visible grain and improved overall encoding you usually see with H.265. Colors with the color gamut gave a very slightly improved nuanced look, but this was very, very subtle. Upon initial look, the color looks almost the same compared the BD until you start looking more closely at various scenes (note, my projector was just calibrated recently for rec 709 and bt2020 + HDR and I've got very good wide color gamut coverage). So, all in all, this is no doubt one of the smaller upgrades yet there are still improvements to be seen especially if you are a fan of the film. From an audio perspective, this was the first time I watched this movie on my relatively newer speakers and subs and the movie just sounded outstanding. Very impressed. |

It was pretty tough to pass on this, especially for the slipcover. It's one of the sexiest slips out there! Shiny and embossed in just the right places. I sealed my copy into a polybag to keep it nice and mint. I did the same with the Supreme Cinema Series set as well. ![]() Last edited by Count Orlok; 10-14-2017 at 10:17 PM. |
