I wonder if the 4k remastered release will be higher frame rate or more accurately variable frame rate like it was at the cinemas

UHD Blu-ray doesn't support that. Only fixed frame rates and no 48 FPS

anyone here managed to redeem the 4K code when u already own the HD version?

Edit: I bought the 4K code from a forum here. Redeemed just fine on Vudu when I already own the HDX version.

UHD can't achieve 48 fps or is not programmed to achieve it? And it would clearly be able to handle 3D since blu ray could do it, but they never programmed 3D support into UHD either. I have 5 UHD discs, and mostly continue to support blu ray, blu ray 3D and DVD depending on the pricing and movie. UHD and blu ray, I think you need a certain visual type of film to really see the difference. Watching something like Return of the Jedi UHD vs the Blu ray, the blu ray actually looks better IMO, so not a good example of UHD.

On topic, Avatar 1 3D is a generally good action/adventure film. Avatar 2's story is not quite as strong, but on a second viewing, was entertaining despite some flaws. The 3D definitely delivers a strong 3D experience more consistent with each shot than Avatar 1's 3D.

48 FPS is not a supported frame rate for BD, 3D BD or UHD-BD. Not in the specs.

I see, thanks Lee. So UHD's hardware is the limitation. That's unfortunate.

What is considered the best 1080 release of Avatar?

I rented the film once in 2012 on BD and had no issue with it. I just got the UHD and the AI upscale consistently bothered me throughout (e.g. eyebrow hairs on the Navi have serious AI syndrome and there's something terribly wrong with live action too). Now I want to buy the film on 1080 BD. I understand that the most recent BD releases are also based on the AI upscale, so I'll have to avoid them.

Is this 3-disc Extended Collector's Edition the one to go for?
