Default 3 D Television

Less than 53% of homes in the US have high definition televisions of which only 69% subscribe to high definition programing; and less than 10% of homes in the US have a Blu ray player. Your thinking is grossly flawed if you think that 3D will take off anytime soon. Don't invest in that format at this time! I am very engrossed with audio/video and having seen Avatar in both 2D and 3D; I was very disappointed with the 3D. Was it thrilling, yes, but there needs to be a lot of improvement to make a believer of me; and typically I am noted amoungst my friends as an early adopter of leading edge technology. Rememer it took about 15 years to get high definition. There are multiple 3D technologies, they have a sweet spot for viewing; which means that some in the room will have a compromised view; the 3D experience requires tricking the brain; and some who are visually impaired (strabismus) will not see the effect; not to mention others are subject to nausea and headaches. Were you not disappointed as I was with blurring of the 3D effect. The floating "jellyfish" in Avatar in the 3D movie lacked the exceptional detail which the 2D version displayed. The system currently is greatly flawed. The manufacturers would love you the consumer to spend your money; however I don't see 3D developed at a level acceptable of the audio/videophile for ten to twenty years.

Default Avatar The Future of Cinema!

Recently I read that several of the upcoming blockbuster movies being released are most likely going to get the 3D treatment because of the huge success of Avatar! The movie industry needs to bring people back into the theaters (most of us wait until the Blu Ray release on a large HD LCD TV) rather than spend an arm and a leg to see a movie outside the home. Now that 3D has grown up (thanks to James Cameron) the goal of Hollywood (movie studios) is to have everything in 3D - including the future of broadcast TV (first with Sports, then movies, etc.). I think in the cinemas it will take off - but of course it always depends on how good the movie is too! In the home who wants to spend mega more bucks on a new 3D Blu Ray Player and a 3D HD TV? Not me, not into it that much and would rather see my 3D on the big screen (I only have a 52 wide screen at home).

Why would I do that? 3D is the "OAR" of avatar. 2D is a compromised version of the film. Anyway, the 3D (i saw it on a digital screen that used the realD system, for what its worth) was sharper than any multiplex film projection I've been witness to.

I saw Avatar in a RealD theater and it was...OK. It was kind of cool but definitely not needed and the 3d effect wasn't as great as I hoped. To me, Ice Age 3 still showcased the best use of 3d I've seen at theaters.

What will happen to 3D in 2012 when the next dozen 100 million plus budget movies in 3D fail at the box office? Will it be another round of "we are sorry it's not working, see you all in the 2020's when we will try again!" Just because one movie is popular now in 3D does not mean 3D is here too stay. Humans change their mind and taste quicker then changing their pants.
no, 3d never took off before, it was used as a gimmick on some films (usually on horror titles once the franchise got stale) for the past 60 years with different amounts of "success" but they where few and relatively far between for real content. In the mid 80 IMAX 3D came out (mostly with specials and small extras) and in the 2000s RealD came out and slowly they have been growing, with more and more films and larger more mainstream films. It is not just because Avatar did (is doing) extremely well but there are two differences
1) before 3D=cost the ticket price was the same but the theatre needed cheap paper glasses while now 3D= profit, charge more but the glasses are reusable
2) they are in very different genres, it is not just the "see the knife, shark...." coming towards you. There is animated (Caroline), sci-fi (Avatar), sword and sandals (Clash of the titans), Horror (Saw VII), fiction (Harry Potter).... many titles and many age groups.

it is not a matter of cost but what the tech can do and what will be needed at home which make it improbable. Planes took off but the promised flying car has not and honestly never will.
so you bring an article talking about 2020 if we are anywhere near lucky as an example why it is bound to happen? Anything more then 5 years in the future uses tech that no one knows if it can happen. If it is more then 1-2 years pretend it does not because most techs that are 5+ years away usually are not.

Quote:
Actually my argument is that 3D tech has been around a long time and it has never taken off in the home...ever.
but nothing takes off before it takes off? right was BD bound to be a failure because WMV DVD did not take off? was 3D in the theatres anymore of a success all those other times that 3D at home was not?

As for Canada, we are always behind the curve (as a country) on stuff like this. The analogue cut-off for OTA is in 2011 (and from what I heard it might be pushed back), Apple iphone was in the US market a long time before the Canadian, I don't think Tivo is still officially available in Canada….

who cares, didn't you read the article, some guy in the Japanese government back in 2008 wants the TVs by 2020, that is all that matters, who cares if there are no cameras to create the content

Don't you know that it is more then enough reason not to buy into 3D now or in the foreseeable future. I am sure these people did not buy DVD as well because DVD came out in 97 and BD in 06, that was less then 10 years as well.

So with week 7, Avatar is supposedly only $6mil away from sinking Titanic. If this film has real long legs, you think that will delay the blu release?

Last I heard the Blu-Ray was slated for June, which is ~6 months from the theatrical release. Most new releases come out on Blu about 4-5 months after the theatrical release, so it's a bit longer than normal, but not by too much.

I thought it beat Titanic already

I don't pay much attention to box office numbers, but I can wait a little longer until this gets released on BD. I want the extended version, and all the extras done right.
