If you could give a hit that means you care. And the 1984 movie is far better than that horrible mini-series which you must be referring to. I really couldnt give a rap about that and yes I did see all of it a while back - dreadful. |

![]() So is there any theatrical Blu of Dune with the superior US transfer and a slip? EDIT: The Dutch release comes in a Metalpak; obviously that'll be the inferior European transfer though... Last edited by Visionist; 07-11-2014 at 09:27 AM. |

Loved these books and it was pretty painful watching this film but if you are interested in seeing what could have been check out the just released documentary Jodorowsky's Dune. Talk about an adaption that would have made fans head explode. Pretty fascinating stuff, especially the H.R. Giger production design paintings.

I picked up the US Blu and its only the theatrical version. I went to my DVD collection and saw I had the US Steelbook DUNE DVD that has both the theatrical and Alan Smithee cut. I wish the BD had that. I guess I will hold onto the DVD as well.

I don't know if they upscaled it to 1080i or if there's an HD source out there, but it looked bad. Really bad. |

It wouldn't surprise me if it looked bad. For years the only way to see the extended cut was to either record it off TV. Also, the 2006 steelbook DVD transfer is actually really good for a DVD. Wherever Universal got that the source for that master is beyond me, but I'm sure it would look decent on BD.

Australian Version Mini-series runs app. 280 minutes. All 3 eps are on one disc.
No subtitles. Audio English only Making Of Dune Part 1-A film makers vision & part 2-A production Story plus trailer the only special features and all on Disc one. Audio DTS-HD MA 5.1 Video case says 1080i but my system can't confirm this. Bitrate hangs around in the mid teens for the most part. Not much above 20. Film: 292 minutes (Extras are 180 minutes according to the packaging) 2 Discs - Parts 1 and 2 are on disc one, Part 3 and the extras are on disc two (I haven't watched the extras yet so I don't know the details on those) Audio: German DTS-HD MA 5.1, English DTS-HD MA 5.1 Subtitles: German (not hard encoded thankfully) 1080p (I'd have to check the bitrate again but I think it was in the 22-24 range for the portion I checked) There's also a nice booklet that comes with the release that unfortunately is completely in German. It appears to be bios on the characters. |

If anyone's interested, here's an audio podcast from last year with a group of nerds reminiscing about Dune.
http://www.imore.com/ad-hoc-5-dune "Guy English, Don Melton, and Rene Ritchie talk about Dune, the classic Frank Herbert novel and the crazy David Lynch film. It all goes spice-wacky quickly, however, and no 1980s sci-fi is left unharmed. Yes, this podcast is a killing word." |

You have your opinion and we have ours. Glad you stick to your guns.
I personally think that Lynch's version isn't worth the film it was printed on. And he should never have been allowed to do his interpretation of Herbert's vision with his $47 million monstrosity. Not to mention in the book, Harkonnen was never described as that disgusting as Lynch's movie showed. He was an aristocrat to the letter, and would presented himself as such, no matter what his actual depravities were behind closed doors as it's Lynch's ego in the way. When i first rented this movie on video at 13 after reading the books i was pissed off at this movie as i was bored throughout as i was nearly falling asleep after being lost for 35 minutes and don't get me started on that ending where it rains on Arrakis, i cried as Lynch's ego went in the way. Water kills Sandworms and it would slaughter the worms, destroy the spice, make unconventional space travel impossible, kill spice junkies and bring doom to the galaxy. Maltin is right in his review "You know your in big trouble when the film's opening narration (setting up the story) is completely incomprehensible, it is imaginative and has a big cast but the whole affair is joyless and not to mention long!". Even Time magazine says " "Most sci-fi movies offer escape, a holiday from homework, but Dune is as difficult as a final exam. You have to cram for it." And my favorite book movie critics Mick Martin and Marsha Porter of DVD/Video guide gave it a rating of Turkey out of 5 stars saying "The good thing about this movie version of Dune is that it makes one want to read or reread the book, otherwise it's a $47 million mess". I agree as some books aren't meant to be motion pictures but should stay books. My uncle did saw this in theaters when it came out and he told me that was pissed he had to read one of those glossary papers they handed out for research for the audience on opening night with a friend who has read the book. someone was whispering to someone explaining some things to that man but no one shushed as everyone too was listening to him as they were lost as the film was met with dead silence as my uncle was lost too 35 minutes after the narration. That man shushed as he was confused too. My uncle told me that he saw some people walk out on the movie during the middle and in some parts of the film and that he heard someone said "Oh come on!" when it rained at the end and that some people threw popcorn at the screen booing at the end credits. Not to mention the film is poorly written, poorly acted by some actors, poorly paced, poorly developed and poorly directed as i think Lynch was the wrong director for the project as he was a poor choice when it should had been Ridley Scott for his 2 part movie idea as he could had pulled it off. Although once the film bombed at the box-office and with critics, Lynch vowed never to do big budget tentpole big studio Hollywood films and he admits in a 1990 interview with a retrospect on the film that he should have never done Dune and was selling out to the Hollywood system with that movie as later he disowned the film. Even one of my friends who is a Lynch fan agrees that Dune is the worst film of his career and he doesn't consider it in Lynch's filmography and he agreed with me that he is glad Lynch returned to independent filmmaking as big budget Hollywood blockbusters aren't for him. I don't like the mini-series either, some books should stay books. Last edited by DenOfEarth; 07-26-2014 at 10:03 PM. |

I like it, and, no, it's not faithful to the book. I don't care. It's a beautiful movie to look at even with the clunky early '80s special effects. Great cast of actors, cool intricately detailed sets and costumes, not to mention that crazy soundtrack by Toto. Totally unique for its day. Frank Herbert himself sorta liked it (he certainly didn't condemn it) and so did Harlan Elison. I have more respect for those two than anonymous keyboard jockeys. I'm not going to waste my time hunting down the clips, but you can find them talking about the movie on the duneinfo YouTube channel. David Lynch is being bashed by both ends of the spectrum. The book guys hate him for the changes he made and now the Jodorowsky fans bash him for not being daring or avante garde enough. I posted in the "Jodorowsky's Dune" thread that AJ hated Lynch's movie because it wasn't Lynchian enough. By that, I think Alejandro meant that Lynch compromised his artistic integrity and made a conventional studio film and it wasn't bizarre and "out there" enough like Eraserhead, etc. If you haven't already, watch Jodorowsky's Dune ... particularly the end where he admits to wanting to rape Frank Herbert's book and make something completely different. Oh, man, you book guys would be having seizures in the aisles if the studios had given Jodorowsky the green light back then instead of Lynch. That early 2000's Dune miniseries on the Sci-Fi channel was boring, low-budget crapola. Everthing about it was mediocre. At least DUNE is entertaining. Movies are supposed to be entertaining, right, otherwise it's a documentary. Last edited by posthaste; 07-28-2014 at 08:04 PM. |
