It's not great, but I'd still take the 4K over it.

No the 4K is definitely better than the Blu-ray. But they color-timed the transfer based on that old Blu-ray master (which is inaccurately cool) and grain-managed some of the optical shots. It’s not terrible, it’s just ok.

The audio on the old BD is much better than the 4k (the 3D audio is even better). But video wise I'd still put the 4k over the BD.

I don’t have a receiver capable of DTS:X yet. You’re saying the old blu-ray’s surround sound is better than the DTS:X track?!

The bass on the DTS laserdisc and corrected DVD had ungodly power. It was correct for this kind of movie... a subwoofer killer in a good way.

That's when they mastered for high end theater setups, not rinky dink soundbars.

hmm fishing line? I was listening to a podcast the other day that was telling the story of how they were for ages looking for a way to get that perfect ripple effect that Spielberg had requested and only at the last moment before shooting that scene did they randomly find a guitar note that resonated the right way to cause the ripple as a solution

There's really nothing I hate more than when my subwoofer rattles or whatever you call it. Takes me right out of the movie. It amazes me people enjoy that stuff.

It was a guitar string fed through the bottom of the car, and the string was plucked to get water ripples. I don't recall the string ever being visible though, or even in the shot at all.

Spielberg wanted to create a certain ripple effect based on a creature no one has seen, let alone what kind of ripple it would make. Probably why he's such a great director.

Apparently more like the 3D version.

ah i see, i hadn't realised the string was connected to the cup in the way the podcasters described it

It wasn't connected to the cup, it was fed through into the dashboard underneath. The string was plucked underneath the car, and it vibrated the cup.
There's no string visible during the sequence.

As Spielberg tells it, he was in his car stuck at a light and listening to some rock song with the volume cranked up and he looked down and noticed the bass was causing the drink in the cupholder to ripple.

He realized that could be a cool effect for the movie so passed it on.

I got my 4k ultimate collection from amazon today, and I compared the print quality of the artwork on the discs with the 25th anniversary set. I have to say the artwork of the discs on the older set look like much higher quality then the discs from the ultimate collection. The ultimate collection discs have a darker tint to them and tend not to look as clear on the artwork as well as the way the printing is on the discs

I don't think it would be a bootleg since I got it new from amazon but it just seemed odd to me

Something might be up with these. I received my “new” copy from Amazon today. It had no wrapping at all and the J card was on backward affixed with packing tape wrapped around the box. I kid you not.

I’ve heard of this kind of thing happening to others occasionally but a true WTF moment when it happens to you.
