The 18GB 4K leak of Breaking Bad is an AVC re-encode of a lossless capture of the original HEVC encode - the original must be much smaller, since that's something like 40Mbps (ie, maximum blu-ray video bitrate). Streaming at blu-ray bitrates is not going to happen anytime soon (and hence why 4K streaming is a joke, at least for anything with grain/noise).

If you're saying you think that the studios will be too lazy to bust out new transfers for UHD then I understand that point too, but a lot of catalogue masters are sub-par for HD, never mind UHD, so if the studios start upscaling that shit then they'll be found out very quickly and could do irreparable harm to a format which needs everything to go right if it's to have any kind of success. Will we see 4K upscales of modern 2K finished DI shows (which look so good to begin with that they upscale deliciously well)? Possibly, although a straight-up 1080p encode with the rest of UHD's bells and whistles (WCG, HDR, 10-bit) added on might be more likely, and ultimately less misleading. Time will tell. |

Hollywood's all about misleading. Why say 1080p when you can say 4k even when it's not.

People should take the example of CBS, and what they did with The Next Generation and mark cases accordingly. |

I remember on my Doctor Who forum arguing with someone about BD being better than DVD or not. His position was it all looked the same and was a marketing scam. He had a BD player, so I asked him to rent Aliens on BD somehow, since he said it was one of his favorite movies. He eventually did and was BLOWN AWAY by the quality.
Crappy old DVD masters destroyed BD in the early days, I really do believe. If they do the same thing with UHD then they're idiots of the highest order. Not that I give UHD much chance either way. |

![]() The heck of it is we may well get a sea change of mastering practices in the industry for UHD (Universal and Warners apparently have new regimes in place) but will anyone care, outside of the hardest hardcore videophile with bottomless pockets? |

Good point and this worries me about UHD. If they just put 1080p content on the disc and specify it's 1080p, fine. The players will upscale as needed. But if they do fake upscales and try to pass things off as 4k when they really could have just put it on as 1080p that will confuse people and give us another reason to distrust the format. They need to be open and honest about the transfers.

![]() ![]() And I am happy and proud to be owned by my 780 something and growing blu collection ![]() I will not shift over to the super niche-cash cow that is 4K as an intentional purchase. Sure, the TV's are popping up in stores all over and people are told it's the latest and greatest, but the layperson (and salesperson) has no idea what the minute difference is between 4K and blu (not to mention the fact that there will hardly be any native 4K material for them to watch on said 4K TV) I mean they turn the contrast and brightness all the way up on displays, edges galore, so it "appears" as if it's better. Yes, color gamut is improved, but really, is it enough to convert? No, no it's not...there's still a majority of people whose DVD's GREATLY outnumber their blu collections (thankfully no one on this forum, lol) |

Prior to Blu-Ray being launched, there was A LOT of promotion about how much space there would be for a generous amount of extras on Blus. So what happened? Many titles didn't even port over the extras from the previously released DVDs and came out movie only! Why?!
The studios consistently shoot themselves in the foot and then wonder why they're limping. |
