The 18GB 4K leak of Breaking Bad is an AVC re-encode of a lossless capture of the original HEVC encode - the original must be much smaller, since that's something like 40Mbps (ie, maximum blu-ray video bitrate). Streaming at blu-ray bitrates is not going to happen anytime soon (and hence why 4K streaming is a joke, at least for anything with grain/noise).

I'm holding off on The 5th Element - this is always one of movies to come soon onto dvd/bluray to show it off, and with the recently done 4K master, you can bet the UHD Blu will be coming soon.

A bad master is a bad master, I do understand that. What I'm saying is that something finished ON FILM like your Batman Begins (or, say, the Scream movies which look bloody awful on Blu, pardon the pun) can yield a new 4K transfer any time the content providers so wish. If something gets a poor Blu-Ray with lots of noise reduction or sharpening that doesn't automatically mean that the original underlying elements are similarly afflicted, they're still sitting snugly in their climate-controlled vault waiting to be transferred anew.

If you're saying you think that the studios will be too lazy to bust out new transfers for UHD then I understand that point too, but a lot of catalogue masters are sub-par for HD, never mind UHD, so if the studios start upscaling that shit then they'll be found out very quickly and could do irreparable harm to a format which needs everything to go right if it's to have any kind of success.

Will we see 4K upscales of modern 2K finished DI shows (which look so good to begin with that they upscale deliciously well)? Possibly, although a straight-up 1080p encode with the rest of UHD's bells and whistles (WCG, HDR, 10-bit) added on might be more likely, and ultimately less misleading. Time will tell.

Hollywood's all about misleading. Why say 1080p when you can say 4k even when it's not.

I've been saying all along that there should be Certified 4K labels on UHD BDs and any film or show that features upscaled footage should be labelled appropriately.

People should take the example of CBS, and what they did with The Next Generation and mark cases accordingly.

That's far too sensible an idea, chip. It'll never catch on.

I think the Certified 4K label would be useful, they can use 4K All the Way™ as a slogan.

I remember on my Doctor Who forum arguing with someone about BD being better than DVD or not. His position was it all looked the same and was a marketing scam. He had a BD player, so I asked him to rent Aliens on BD somehow, since he said it was one of his favorite movies. He eventually did and was BLOWN AWAY by the quality.

Crappy old DVD masters destroyed BD in the early days, I really do believe. If they do the same thing with UHD then they're idiots of the highest order.

Not that I give UHD much chance either way.

Maybe this time 'The Look And Sound Of Perfect' might actually mean something.

The heck of it is we may well get a sea change of mastering practices in the industry for UHD (Universal and Warners apparently have new regimes in place) but will anyone care, outside of the hardest hardcore videophile with bottomless pockets?

Good point and this worries me about UHD. If they just put 1080p content on the disc and specify it's 1080p, fine. The players will upscale as needed. But if they do fake upscales and try to pass things off as 4k when they really could have just put it on as 1080p that will confuse people and give us another reason to distrust the format. They need to be open and honest about the transfers.

It really rubbed me the wrong way from the beginning that they used that slogan and then dared to use old, crappy masters and sub-par transfers. That most certainly must have hurt blu-ray early on when people couldn't even see any benefit between their DVDs and the old lousy masters ported over to blu-ray. The same thing that happened with 3D - there was lots of initial excitement, because I think many people do enjoy a fun 3D movie, but between so many mediocre films with barely any depth, and poor early conversions that never should have been released to the public, it's no wonder that many people quickly gave up on the format. Hollywood did that to themselves. And this is coming from a lifelong 3D fan.

And I am happy and proud to be owned by my 780 something and growing blu collection

I will not shift over to the super niche-cash cow that is 4K as an intentional purchase. Sure, the TV's are popping up in stores all over and people are told it's the latest and greatest, but the layperson (and salesperson) has no idea what the minute difference is between 4K and blu (not to mention the fact that there will hardly be any native 4K material for them to watch on said 4K TV)

I mean they turn the contrast and brightness all the way up on displays, edges galore, so it "appears" as if it's better. Yes, color gamut is improved, but really, is it enough to convert? No, no it's not...there's still a majority of people whose DVD's GREATLY outnumber their blu collections (thankfully no one on this forum, lol)

Prior to Blu-Ray being launched, there was A LOT of promotion about how much space there would be for a generous amount of extras on Blus. So what happened? Many titles didn't even port over the extras from the previously released DVDs and came out movie only! Why?!

The studios consistently shoot themselves in the foot and then wonder why they're limping.

Samsung has announced, and shown, their Ultra HD Blu-ray player, model UBD-K8500, at the IFA show this week in Berlin. Price not officially announced but is said to be under $500, but it's not expected to begin shipping until early 2016.

Also in UHD BD news, Fox has announced all new releases will be offered in Ultra HD Blu-ray format as well as HD Blu-ray and DVD formats.
