Not sure if this has been posted yet, but I just discovered (completely by accident) something posted by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC):

AVATAR - EXTENDED VERSION, 3D.
161 mins.

http://www.bbfc.co.uk/DFF264520

Not really sure it's any more info than we already had (did we know the extended version would be out in 3D?), the release date of 27th August 2010 can't be right though...

Default Avatar Blu-ray is a properly done product

Avatar Blu-Ray is a properly done product. My sincerest thanks to all involved. You understand what is important for people willing to pay for Blu-Ray titles.

Whats so great?

1) First and foremost .... It played perfectly the first time with no issues or updates required. Playback was flawless. Avatar isn't that new a release now, but even so at least 50% of the similarly aged titles didn't play on my system without a player update (2 years ago it was close to 100%). Thanks not forcing me to search the internet, update 7, and update my player software (usually at least 1 hour wasted time). I don't really expect new new releases to play and never buy them, but Avatar played perfectly after my wait period and I am satisfied.

2) They included both Blu-ray and SD-DVD in the box. Every release should be this way. If my BD won't play at least I can watch something and can also play it in my portable. I am buying a license not the disk and it makes perfect sense that every BD title include a SD-DVD.

3) There wasn't a lot of BD-live crapware associated with this Blu-ray and what was quick, worked perfectly, and was seamlessly integrated.

4) I wasn't forced to endure many unskippable movie previews, junk screeens and ads just to get to my movie. Every time I am forced to watch trailers I am put off the movies being promoted.

To sum it up ....... it just played perfectly, which is the only thing I want from a BD. With due respect for the artists, I never ever watch the "making of extras"...... it is like dissecting a dead body .... I don't want to know.

That'a a classification for the theatrical re-release, not the Blu-ray; that's why it says '27th August' and '3D'. I thought all this was very well known.

Very nice post. I find myself thinking the same on movies at times.
It is nice to play the FIRST time as new release. Like buying a brand new model of car and never needing service bulliten updates.

The trailors being forced on some movies is ridiculous. Every film should have trailors as a menu option, not forced...ffs at least let me be able to chapter forward it.

The extras stuff, of late I agree...I'm finding if I get too much into HOW it was made, it de-mystifies it to a degree and loses a tad of the magic. I play guitar and once I learn the song note for note and what key its in and every single solo bend and vibratto...I dont like it as much on the radio. Strange. That said, I do like Directors commentary on WHY a movie was made, etc.

Further to your post, I'd also like to say that Avatar is a surreal dream of a movie, a sci fi, a fantasy, and even a new genre of color-art picture that stands all alone.

This movie is perfect for me.

If we use Nielson Videoscan data we could figure Avatar has sold around 6.4m BD units after 14 week in release.

I wonder how much the Limited Collectors Box Set will cost in the US, since it is apparently priced at 150 Euros in France.

Furthermore, wtf could be in that set for that price Must be an actual piece of unobtainium

I compared the official trailer which was the scope extract with actual production stills in the film's native 1.78:1 format for reference because I was curious myself.

Another cut of the film so soon? Didn't even know George Lucas was involved.

Because George Lucas is the only person who ever makes extended editions.

And its totally not as if James Cameron has been doing extended cuts/special editions for practically his entire career.

There isn't a rolleyes big enough

Completely agree on that. Worked flawlessly the first time I popped it in.

Is anyone actually going to pay twice again to see Avatar though?

Once for the directors cut
and again for the directors cut in 3D

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm not considering paying to see it again for a few extra minutes of footage that don't add to the story and the fabled Na'vi sex scene. Why would anyone go and pay to watch a CGI alien sex scene anyway?

I'll probably get the directors cut Blu-ray for the special features and just swap out the DVD in my steelbook for the bonus features disc.

Don't get me wrong. I love Avatar, but James Cameron has enough of my money already.

Actually, the new footage DOES add to the story.

[Show spoiler]One of the most important new additions is a scene that reveals the Na'vi massacred the humans after they bulldozed the Willow Trees (where Jake and Neytiri made whoopee), which explains why some of the humans are so gung ho about killing the Na'vi. It also explains how Quaritch wants to take advantage of the attack to attack the Tree, and how the scientists think the Willow trees were specifically chosen to be bulldozed, solely to get a reaction out of the Na'vi in order to justify attacking the tree.

Not to mention other scenes like Graces School or the scene added to the end of the movie add to the backstory and characters as well.

I just received official news from Fox.

The Avatar special edition disc coming out this winter will be a 3 BD set.

It will NOT contain the Theatrical Cut of the film, but the extended edition + hours of exclusive and unissued bonuses.

I'm presuming from the info I have, that the discs will be the special edition + the seamless branching edition total version on 2 discs (thus preserving top quality encoding), with the bonuses on disc 3.

So hang out to the first release guys

Wow that really sucks. A cheap way to ensure anybody who held out for this edition would still need to buy the original.
