I just read something from engadget about a German company who is already working on techniques for glasses-free 3D surpassing any known 3D experience; here's the kicker: this format can be applied to TVs that are NOT "3D ready" since the format is alien to existing ones that require all new hardware and glasses. Philips is also in the mix with its own bag of tricks for glasses-free 3D. The next thing seems to be arriving even before this thing lol. The never-ending story.

Philips had been working on an autoscopic 3D display that did not require glasses. It also has very limited depth fidelity and in no way can replicate the realistic depth of true stereoscopic 3D.

Real 3D needs two distinct left/right video channels because you have two eyes. Any genuine 3D system, even if it does manage to be autoscopic, would be able to use the same stereo left/right 3D signal that's just been approved. The display technology is not part of the standard... just how to get stereo video from device to device.

The philips system wasn't a true 3D system... it was a standard 2D image with data to describe depth-measurements for identified objects in the image so that the display could place them along a pre-defined (and limited) set of front/back points for display. Basically it's anyone's worst nightmare if they hate the "cardboard cut out" look of bad 3D.

It's got its uses, like for ads and 3D images for common spaces like at an airport etc, but it's not high-end video and it's not real stereo vision.

That information might be dated. Apparently Philips and this other German company are moving in an entirely different direction. The German company will be showcasing prototypes in summer of 2010 which claims to be leaps and bounds over glasses. How much will it cost? Probably leaps and bounds over what this 3D costs (which is basically an entire HT renovation). But they're claims are on the contrary. We'll just wait and see....

As long as it's using true dual-channel 3D stereo images (and producing images as good or better than those with eyewear), the that would be good news. and it would be part of the new 3D spec since the type of 3D display technology isn't the issue, as long as it properly displays the left/right images for genuine stereo vision.

According to DVD-home.nl one of the coming releases is
-------------
15-04-2010 Avatar 2D
-------------

That is great news........
I wonder, is that a European release only? Does anyone know that?

Anyway, it will be good enough for me.

15 April would sound about right, the only problem is, it's still making $30 million a weekend at the US box office alone. If it wins a lot of Academy Awards in March it will likely get a bit of a boost as well, so while I would LOVE to see it in April, unless it slows dramatically at the box office in these next few weeks, I have a bad feeling we will have to wait until May or June.

Good news is, we know for certain it will be out by the end of June !

really cool interview segment on cnn with Cameron and company on AVATAR.

http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/bes...ver.cnn?hpt=C2

The notion of using 3D to pull you in and help dissolve the "movie screen" versus distracting you with gimmicks is covered nicely.

The last 100 years of movies are fine just the way they are, thank you very much!

As are the 95% of movies coming out today that aren't in ridiculous 3-D.
Unless it was intended, such as the new alice in wonderland film.

I'm willing to bet that Avatar won't be coming out in April. I'd say May at the earliest depending on how it fares at the Oscars.

I'm pretty sure I read that this has a release date of June 1, 2010, but please do not take my absolute word for it!
I'll try and dig up that link if I can find it.

Default Finally saw this...

yesterday 2/9/10!! Loved it. I went in with mild expectations. I knew the tech would be awesome, but that far exceeded my expectations. But the story was great too! The controversy with the economy and racism that I heard all about didn't really factor in very much at all in my opinion. Overall, great flick. Probably a day one purchase in 2D! The 3D was cool, but it look great in 2D as well.

Only a fool would release it if the movie is still hammering box offices. There's still time for a slowdown though.

PS3 is getting a 3D firmware update this summer. hmmm

lol at "Racism". people find it in chocolate milk these days!

What people actually ARE talking about are the similarities to the romanticized Pocahontas(both the 1803 book and Disney film).
