Hilarious to me that Dunkirk has a critical embargo on it, but not this.

Just another reason to not give a damn what critics say. Such a pompous job. Passing judgment onto others. When most critics couldn't' make a movie to save their lives.

Well said!!! I think the film looks good visually but the story doesn't interest me. And what's with the girl's armor? It's like triple sizing her non existent boobs....

I can't do any electrical work by myself but surely, that shouldn't prevent me to call an electrical job "poor" if everytime I turn on the lights in the toilet, the electric garage door opens itself, no ?

As for the rest, it's not as if all critics were always telling the same thing as if they were truly one unique whole entity with one brain. You don't like the negative reviews McCarthy wrote ? Read the 10+ other critics that are positive instead.

But hey, what can you do against backfire effect and biases, right ? I mean, what does a "consensus" mean anyway ? I'm sure there are some people who will be able to defend Transformers 5 as a misunderstood masterpiece that will be re-evaluated in some years and that the 140 critics who gave it a negative review don't know what they're talking about.

It's all the funnier because Valerian currently has a relatively good critic feedback (so I don't know why people feel the need to ostracise one specific review) and because Todd McCarthy is, with Peter Travers, Jonathan Rosenbaum, A.O. Scott, Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, Peter Bradshaw and a few others, one of the critics I can usually trust blindly.

But people really need to stop this non-sense about critics. Find one that have tastes close to yours and just don't care about the others. It's as simple as that.

RT Consensus:

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets uses sheer kinetic energy and visual thrills to overcome narrative obstacles and offer a viewing experience whose surreal pleasures often outweigh its flaws.

By that same standard, you can't say anything good about a movie either unless you know how to make one.

There is intelligently articulated criticism and then there is Todd McCarthy's review of Valerian.

Yeah, geez, that Todd McCarthy is a superdouche. He's entitled to not like the movie, but suggesting that the films that top the American box office represent the pinnacle of refined tastes is a bit much.

At least, that's definitely something I agree with.
The current #1 of the US BO is Beauty and the Beast, and cinematic masterpieces like Baby Boss et Pirates of the Caribbean 5 are in the top 10.

This being written and joke aside, that's not what McCarthy is saying. What he's saying is that he believes it's unlikely for the movie to work in the US, thus leaving Besson with only the other markets to hopefully cope with his usual quite specifically taste-y of a movie.

And it's actually not much worse than saying it's a movie for "discerning moviegoers with strange taste and sensibilities."

About a week till Valerian 3D hits theaters. They really need to start pushing the critic reviews in the TV spots and ads at this time hopefully.

Like this new trailer:

I am definitely a big sci-fi action movie fan and will check this out in theaters for sure. I'm not hearing much talk about it, but it seems at least some critics have really enjoyed it based on that trailer. "Best experience since Avatar" says one, probably relating to the visuals and 3D.

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/vale...ousand_planets

No big deal, but it's got 67% currently positive on tomatoes, 24 liked it, 12 didn't as much.

For those interested in the 3D in Valerian, from the trailers I've seen, this is going to be a mostly strong 3D layered film, which is great.

I am not a fan of mostly mild 3D movies (boring, almost 2D 3D), so Valerian should hopefully match the awesome 3D as seen in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 back in May 2017 (note; the pre-order on bestbuy.com is a limited edition for the blu ray 3D/4K set and will probably sell out fast as with Rogue One 3D blu ray and Doctor Strange 3D blu rays).

How many here plan to see Valerian and the City of 1000 Planets 3D in theaters on opening week?

I want to see it in 3D along with Dunkirk in IMAX for the first time, hopefully.

Cool. Yeah, Dunkirk releasing on the same day will be a challenge for this film, knowing how many Nolan fans are out there, but this should hopefully earn some families interested in adventure sci-fi special effects for next weekend. War for the Planet of the Apes looks like a dark, grim movie in comparison to this, so families may choose this instead if they already saw Spider-Man Homecoming, which was entertaining.

It's been a fully packed month of big movies, that's true.
I was watching TV around 8 PM or so, and saw the very TV Spot I posted above. Glad to see that. Hopefully it'll open some eyes to consider seeing it.

I just saw that commercial you were talking about and it's enough to give it a shot when it opens.

I have not seen Dunkirk yet, but Christopher Nolan's last two films were not that great, The Dark Knight Rises was a let down of a film, very uninspired and the lesser of the trilogy. And Interstellar, hell, what a pretentious piece!

If Dunkirk is the same caliber as those last two films he made, consider his directorial run done.
