Just purchased both sets on Movies Unlimited. With their May coupon ($15 off $100), brings them down to a more palatable $47.57 each.

But the studios are aware that the boutique model is working quite well for them, if you give something a new encode of an existing master (or even a new transfer) and a DV pass in fancy limited edition packaging then the collectors and connoisseurs - of which there are surprisingly few, even in a niche of a niche format like 4K - will snap it up so the studios aren't losing money by printing tens of thousands of copies.

That said, even the remastered Shaun of the Dead got a standalone release and not just a steel, so why no such one for JP? Beats me. But I think it's also a a clear exercise in money grabbing re: JP, if people only want the first one they've got to have all three...for now
Even as a collector and lover of movies I don't give a sh/t. I'm tired of re-buying releases for a pebble of an upgrade and seeing my brethren tripping over themselves to buy them. I feel we're truly being taken. Now, if we find out they actually went the extra mile and are giving us a drastic upgrade, I'm all in. Otherwise, keep your money grabbing tricks to yourself. What I already own is good enough. I'm not biting.

I partially agree with you, since I've avoided double-dipping on many occasions. When I first read the reviews for the original 4K set, I was disappointed since two of the films had very poor video scores. That was disheartening, especially since the first one started it all and I expected Spielberg to be more involved. But if the fully-released details eventually confirm my suspicion, this new offering will fix those problems. Plus, all of the movies will have Dolby Vision, which means I won't have to keep switching that between them on my player.

I only liked the first two and since the Atmos is a tampered with remix it's an easy pass for me.

Eh, if Uni is starting to take a page out of the Sony playbook, maybe they’ll start throwing the original audio on these as well? On the other hand, I could also see some higher up not really seeing a big difference between an Atmos mix and the original 5.1. It’s not as drastic a change as opposed to say, original mono vs. Atmos or stereo vs. Atmos. Regardless, I expect the digital copies on streaming services to update with this new release. If memory serves, you can currently stream the JP trilogy in 4K with their (presumably) original 5.1 mixes.

Glad to see some love for the second movie here.

Even though I love Sam Neill and Laura Dern in the original film, Jeff Goldblum was hilarious. Having him come back for the sequel and pairing him with Julianne Moore...total brilliance. I read recently though, that she mainly accepted that role both to work with Spielberg, and pay off a significant divorce settlement.

Yeah, I've got this:

So unless Laura Dern and/or Bryce Dallas Howard personally deliver these to my house while riding a triceratops, I'm all set.

IF the original gets a standalone remastered/improved video release someday, that's a definite maybe.

Is the original Jurassic Park encode _bad_? Or is this just better?

The transfer itself isn't too exciting to begin with.

Given the AI processing that was used on The Sugarland Express how do we know this won’t be more of the same for the original trilogy even if they are new scans?

I guess we will learn this close to or after the release. Shocking!

Which is why I hesitate to preorder, for fear we may get something worse than we already have.

There will probably do some sort of fancy release for the 35th Anniversary in '28. So if ya want to wait a few more years.

The jurassic world steels also show remastered verbiage. If so then it doesn't bold well.

I'm not holding my breath.

It's the transfer/master itself that's problematic. Mediocre-at-best black levels, lots of DNR, WCG/HDR color grading that feels like turning a knob to 11 instead of actually making the scene/colors look bright and "lifelike", etc

The CGI stands out like a sore thumb in most shots but there's only so much that can be done about that in 4K...

I am not yet fully convinced this release will have a new transfer, most likely it's the same one just with DV encode, which can't really fix the underlying issues. But I would really love to be proven wrong on this one, I would pay good money for a high quality, well graded, filmic transfer
