Quasar 27" console, Sony VHS VCR, Pioneer SX-1010 100 watt receiver, two LDL direct/reflecting (Bose 901 knockoff) speakers, and two home-built three-way boxes that would qualify as subwoofers today.

The " T-Rex Stomp" in Jurassic Park was a marvel to all...never looked back.

It didn't include a subwoofer or a media player (DVD or VHS). I added a Toshiba stereo VHS player and a 25" Phillips TV, and I was off and running. Compared to my 2 channel setup, the surround setup seemed quite gimicky, with it's poorly separated pro logic surround sound, but it was enjoyable at the time.

Today that setup would send me running from the room.
What was the point of qouting me wiht that responce
Im confused.

P.S. Just a side note this is my first multi qoute and I'm proud to say I didn it rite

Ok back to topic.

DVDs back in '97... Though I had already been collecting VHS since the late 80's.
Started off with a Sony 60" projection screen (still in use as BR tv) and a HTiB.

I bought my first home theater around 1996. I had a 27" TV with a Panasonic hi fi VCR and a Kenwood home theater in a box. I upgraded to a Bose Lifestyle system a few years later. When DVD came out I upgraded to a Toshiba DVD player (when they finally dropped in price to $250). Then I upgraded to a Panasonic 36" TV until around 2004 when I upgraded again to a Toshiba 46" RTPV, a Denon receiver and DVD player and Infinity speakers. My last upgrade has been the Denon receiver (3808CI) and a Westinghouse 47" LCD TV. I'm currently wanting to upgrade my TV but I don't think that will happen any time soon. Oh yeah, I also added a PS3 bluray player and an SVS subwoofer.

I've been a two channel man since 1975. I really wasn't interested in an HT setup until last year when I heard the Eagles in Melbourne concert in HD-DVD on a good system. I was instantly hooked. I bought an HD-DVD player just for this concert even though I knew that Blu had won the format war.

When I got my first Betamax (Stereo model and a $1,200 price tag) back in the mid-70's, the first thing I did was hook it up to my 2-channel system. Obviously not HT, but surely "multi" channel.

My first home theater, back in the late 90s, was a DVD player and a LaserDisc player. The LD player was a Pioneer Elite, but right now I can't remember what brand of DVD player I had back then! The memory does things to you as you get older but I will never, ever forget becoming the proud and VERY happy owner of an Ayre Acoustics DX-7e DVD transport about '05.
Anyway, my first home theater also consisted of a Rotel pre-pro, a Rotel DTS decoder (separate from the pre-pro), a Rotel multi-channel power amp, 2 pairs of Snells (Type E's in the front, Type K's in the rear) and a Snell center channel speaker, and a Velodyne sub. The television was a 26" Sony XBR direct-view (4:3 ratio.....remember glass-tube TV's?)

Voted blu-ray..

got my home theater system after browsing blu-ray.com for year's then decided later on i should get my self a system together as it's the first of mine....i was brand new to Polk home audio speakers, but were Happy with their high end automotive speakers in the car...so my plan in the start of everything was Polk speakers.

Next was the Onkyo since it was trusted by most here, and I'm happy with how they sound & glad i was pointed towards it...

My TV i had for at least 4 years,i plan to make the move to plasma later on....waiting for all the 2009 model reviews to pan out before i make my choice on best features,PQ....Kind of hate to cheap out on things i buy..

Default 1958!

I count the hallway outside my bedroom where I'd set up my little 8mm projector as my first HT, 51 years ago!

In addition to showing the movies I'd take with my little Brownie movie camera, I'd buy Castle films. I've got a W.C. Fields chase scene from "Never Give a Sucker and Even Break" and a ten minute version of "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein". I always wanted to buy a 35mm projector, which I doubt would fit in the hallway!

Now I have a dedicated HT with front projection and 7.1 sound. I have a display area with various movie memorabilia, including that little Brownie 8mm camera!

Welcome to the site Doug. That sounds really awesome with the old Brownie camera now a part of your "real" HT. However, where's the pics?.....we really, really like pics around here......

All started with Yamaha M-80, Yamaha MX-35, Yamaha DSP1 processor, Yamaha C-80 preamp, Infinity SM150 speakers, Infinity RS 1's for Front effects, Bose 301 Surrounds (No center channel options at that time yet)...huge sound with a 27 inch JVC TV I had a Fisher HIFI VCR a Carver tuner, Carver CD player, and later a Carver pre-amp, a Rotel Turntable, and a DBX dynamic range expander, Noise reduction unit, Bass sub harmonic synth, and route selecetor, I had a yamaha EQ. This I would say was my first HT. (Dolby pro-logic wasn't even out yet).

Default What was your first Home Theater system?

My first attempt was a 19" CRT back in the early 80's. I opened up the case and soldered some speaker wire onto the TV's speaker wires, then soldered the other end to some RCA jacks. Plugged them into the TAPE IN on my old receiver and had all the audio coming out of 4 speakers.
I thought that was the greatest thing ever!

After that, an old Onkyo Pro-logic setup with JBL bookshelf system.
Then a Kinergetics Chiro C-800 Pre/Pro, Denon AVD2000 surround processor, Jamo speakers...

So what was your first HT like?

The first setup I had that I would try to call a home theater system (not just a TV) was a 48" Mitsubishi rear projection HDTV that could change resolutions between 480p, 720p, and 1080i. With that I had a Panasonic 5 disc DVD changer HTiB 5.1 setup and an original Xbox.

Nice avatar by the way.
