No, it is streamed as lossless. When I am listening to my lossless audio, there is a constant 1MB/sec upload stream.

Dunno. I was actually referring to streaming audio via an Apple AirPort Express.

oh, i meant to quote the post at the beginning about the ps3 media server, i installed it last night, and it works, but it takes a long time to pull up the files from the folder, and then the video doesnt play smoothly, anybody familiar with this stuff know if theres any other thing to try and speed it up besides lowering the maximum bandwidth and effecting the quality of the video playback?

Whenever I use this, even for music, it goes very very slowly. Takes like 30 seconds for a song to start, then it skips. Might be my internet connection, but not 100% sure

I have a question regarding the use of PS3mediaserver with my iTunes library on my iMac. I've got it working and it streams fine for the most part, with a few minor glitches. However, it seems that alot of the music I have that I bought from iTunes which has the DRM crap won't stream. Is this normal, or am I doing something wrong? I didn't realize when I bought this music that I couldn't listen to it on anything but my computer or ipod.

You don't need to be connected to the internet at all to use PS3 mediaserver. If you have a router without the internet, your still able to connect both devices to the router and media stream.

If the service is slow, its because the type of file your putting through the Media server needs decoding. If your using a file type supported by the PS3 this is not necessary of course.

The other slow down causes are the distance from your router. If your wireless and miles away from it then of course it will take longer.

I'm not sure what else to tell you. If your having that much trouble.. just use an ethernet cable and go wired, or use the copy function. The copy function can be a good tool to see if you can stream data. Since if its a MP3 for instance, if it takes longer to copy than it does to play the whole thing, then of course it will lag. Same goes for movies. So basically, the copy function needs to run at least the speed time of the actual playtime.

Welcome to the wonderful world of DRM, there's nothing PS3 Media Server can do about encrypted files. The good news is that Apple's finally gotten rid of DRM on most, if not all, iTunes music. You can upgrade your library to become DRM-Free (Apple calls it iTunes Plus) for I think 30 cents a song. As a side benefit, iTunes Plus files are higher quality. Or you could just burn the songs you want to a CD and then re-rip them with iTunes... I think. I don't know if that old trick still works.

As far as I know, all videos purchased from iTunes are DRM'd, so PS3 Media Server can't play them. Complain to Apple/movie studios.

Another important point: Last I checked, PS3 Media Server assumes a 100Mbit wired connection from the computer to the PS3, and thus uses most of that bandwidth so that the transcoded video is of a high quality. If your PS3 is connected to your network via wifi and you are getting stuttering while streaming, you will have to go into the "Transcoding Settings" tab, and under the "Video Quality Settings" heading set the "Maximum Bandwidth" to 50 or less (depending on the quality of your actual setting). Also try setting it to 11 and 1, since those are common fallback speeds with poor connections.

Thank you for the information. I've noticed songs that are DRM free went from $0.99 to $1.29. Is there a simple way upgrade my music library without me having to go through and find every single song that has DRM? Is there some feature in iTunes that will do the work for me? Thanks again.

Yup, there is.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1711

To be fair, not all iTunes Plus songs are $1.29, some are still $0.99, and there's even a rare few at $0.69 (wildly contrary to Apple's claim that a majority of tracks would be $0.69).

Didn't know there were iTunes Plus music videos too, I'll have to keep an eye out for those.

Thanks again for that link. I just checked and it's going to cost me about $35 to upgrade all my music. Not too bad I guess.

I'm using the itunes AAC format for my songs... if I choose "copy" the filesize it creates is approx 50 MB per song which seems a little high to me. What filetype should I keep my songs in so they wont need to be decoded?

so are you saying that i can connect an ethernet cable from the port on my PC to the port on the PS3, and stream it that way? for whatever reason i didnt think of that and was under the assumption that for a wired connection, the cable had to go through the internet router between source and destination, cutting our the middle man would be much easier!

I can't thank you enough for this! I've had .mkv files on my hard drive for awhile and got sick of having to convert to vob streams and then transfer them over to the ps3 by usb. This works!

I played through a couple of mkv files, and while it did take a minute or so to transcode then stream, it was smooth sailing from then on. I did try a .mov file and it was glitching a lot, every few seconds.

However, when I tried to stream iTunes audio files and look at some pictures, it wouldn't work. Both said "there are no titles" when I got to the folder. Is there a limit of subfolders it can look in? They are both a few folders deep in my hard drive. The music files are DRM free too, no stupid restrictions.
