Nice work and advice, BIslander.
![]() My personal preference (as stated much earlier in this thread) if you have the option between optical audio and coaxial audio is the optical connection. Just my personal preference, and both will give you 5.1. I think it's something about the RCA plugs that's off-putting to me. ![]() |

ok guys im at work now and im dying to get this 5.1 thing going for the start of the nhl season tonight
i believe i have located a coaxial cable (looks just like an RCA but only has one yellow plug on each side) i know ive asked this before but i just need some clarification...is there anyway to do HDMI-DVI for video and coaxial for 5.1 audio? or does it depend on the receiver? i know component can do 720p/1080i which is what tv is broadcast in, but i dont feel like going out to buy one and would like to get this done asap so with that, whenever i go to my receivers menu, (from my recollection) it never lets me assign the audio for the following inputs: HDMI1, HDMI2 and BD. it will let me assign it for: TV, SAT so does this mean i cant do a HDMI-DVI connection and use coaxial for audio with my receiver? or am i missing something? (for example, do i need to have the hdmi connection from the dvi into the receiver? is this why it wont let me assign it? ![]() any help would be GREAT! |

OK, I found the manual from Pioneer's website; it's here (approximately 3.4 MB).
Page 16 shows that you can use a component with DVI if using the proper HDMI->DVI adapter. Then on page 86 it says "If the component is a DVI device, use a separate connection for the audio." That is a direct copy and paste. From that I would surmise that you can go into some sort of setting in the interface and select which audio source to use for that HDMI input. I personally prefer fiber optic cable for this, but you can use coax. |

thanks for the help brettallica...unfortunately i dont think my receiver can do hdmi for video and coaxial for audio
![]() it lets me choose the inputs (so HDMI for video and COAX-1 for audio) but a funny thing happens... when im in the receiver menu, i can hear the audio from my speakers (so the coax is working and assigned properly) and the receiver screen says "dolby digital" but the second i leave the menu, the audio no longer works and the video shows, and the display now reads "stereo" why would it let me assign them if they cant be used together? ![]() |

nevermind guys...i figured out a roundabout way of doing things (that i believe was suggested much earlier in this thread
![]() i just let the receiver handle the audio and have the hdmi going straight to my tv sounds great with 5.1 thanks everyone ![]() |

Does this also apply to Direct TV if I want to get 5.1 Surround Sound and is the sound quality the same if I use optical audio or coaxial audio cables or is one cable better than the Other sorry for bringing up this thread again and if this question has been answered before.

You need to run a cable from your cable box in the digital "out" to the back of your receiver, then assign one of the set ups to this particular conection, e.g. DVR, or TV. I have Time Warner cable and I listen to HD 5.1 movies and it sounds awesome.

Run the HDMI cable from the DirecTV box to your receiver. Program that HDMI input for TV viewing. Setup any universal remotes as well. I'm sure you already have an HDMI cable between your Tv and receiver. If not, you will need one there, too. Sit back and enjoy! |

And set up the receiver for Dolby Digital 5.1 for HD channels and PLXII - Movie for SD channels for your listening modes......I think this sounds best with my DirecTv DVR. |

Must be your local station. NBC definitely does DD 5.1 on most network shows.

Yup, it's my local station, WBAL channel 11 in Baltimore. I asked them and they said it is on the "to do list." Nice. Only about a decade late. They answered my email within a few hours on a Sunday, so that's something, I guess.
