[Show spoiler]Its the most important part of Snape's character. It tells why he hates Potter but then defends him all this time. Explanations are wonderful!

One of my coworkers saw the NY premiere last night and, to my surprise, liked it less than Order of the Phoenix, felt it was too long, and didn't care for the ending.

I'd also venture to say
[Show spoiler] having Harry see it via a Shield spell rebounding onto Snape, while practical for time limiting, takes sympathy away from Snape while the book's method of spying into the Penseive shows Harry crossing the line between curiousity and invasion. Still, in both cases it does seem hipocritical of Snape to react the way he did considering how much of Harry's mind he saw.

If it's the darkest of the series, though, why the hell did it get a PG rating?

Seeing it tomorrow morning. Haven't read the book so no clue what to expect. I just watched all of the previous movies over again. Azkaban and Goblet are still my favorites. I originally didn't like Phoenix very much but it is better on repeat viewings. Still it isn't that great.

b/c kids are still going to want to see it and the studio won't risk not getting their business.

Max the "Quidditch is back!!!!" part is unnecessary. That was announced well over a year ago. And it's been in the trailers as well.

Just watched it this morning. It was just 'ok' to me. It has a lot of the same problems as Phoenix did. The two friends I saw it with both came out saying the same thing, they were bored. One almost fell asleep. I didn't have that problem but it was light on the action. I did like a lot of the humor and and the budding romances that played out through most of the middle of the film. It worked much better than the ballroom stuff from film 4.

I haven't read the books so didn't know what was going to happen, but the ending didn't have any sort of punch or emotional connection for me. It just sorta happened and that's that.

It will do like all Potter films and make some good box office but I don't see many going back for repeat viewings in the theater. No way will this gross more than TF2 domestically. It will probably do great overseas.

I would give it a C+.

Noticed there is only one 'rotten' review so far on rottentomatoes and surprisingly it is the most fair of all of them that I have read. It was still rated at 3 out of 5 stars but touches on pretty much every fault I had with the film. There were just some really odd choices with the story.

I just saw it the other night at the drive-in and as a fan of the books I thought the first 3/4s was incredible.
[Show spoiler]I felt there could have been a little more action at the end and kind of thought the part with the raised wands seemed corny, but I thought the part with Harry and Snape at the end was well done.

Dark styling doesn't necessarily mean it is visually or verbally inappropriate for children. For example, take a look at Nightmare Before Christmas (also rated PG). Incredibly dark, but ostensibly meant for children. In this case, the film is dark, while the target audience is likely the age of the primary characters: teenagers.

But that said, it's probably a fluke of sorts on the MPAA's end. They're not perfect, they're people, and they probably just were thinking:
[Show spoiler]"this student attacked by the protagonist and covered in blood isn't too graphic, the protagonist's mentor being assaulted and hurled off a tall tower and dying is ok too."
I think the director even commented somewhere that he was surprised by the rating, as he had been expecting PG-13. The feature is more dramatic than action-based, so perhaps that's why.
[Show spoiler]If the Death Eaters battle in Hogwarts had been translated into film from the book, I think they probably could've gotten a PG-13, even knowing the "violence" in a magical duel is entirely fantasy.

They left out a lot of the dark stuff. IMO there was too much of the so and so is in love with so and so and so on. I really don't think that it pertains to the story as the stuff people were complaining they left out. I would have loved to see more of the Tom Riddle background story. Sometimes the books run together for me, so I don't remember if Harry learned about him more in The Deathly Hallows.
