Whats even funnier is reading the official box office thread for Avatar. Diesel and the Seven Saumurai guy were getting a lot of shit back then as they were the only two actively defending it.

There was no good reason to expect it would explode like it did. It was an example of everything just going right for it and people returning and it not slowing down like no wide release that I can recall of has been able to match (of course referring to modernish times as comparing it to films released 50 years ago etc isn't very valid due to how the release schedules and viewing behaviours have changed). I do get a kick out of this thread, but no one, even people in the industry thought it could even manage half of what it did (not that it would have to even do half of what it did to be a huge success).

What was interesting is how the hype seemed to really start after the film released and not before. Sure people where excited prior to release but it wasn't like a new star wars film or even the hobbit films and so on. After release it was everywhere suddenly and I don't really mean marketing. People where just talking about it, and it's very good use of 3d (but by today's standards far from the best) really helped make it something you couldn't get anywhere but a cinema at the time.

I do find it interesting how Titanic has continued to grow on me though, where as 8ish years ago I thought it was just good and didn't get a lot of the acclaim I know consider it to be great.
