Ah yes, no one wants to see a Nic Cage/grindhouse/3D/Splatterfest movie at that time of the year

Ok, I went to see this today. 5/5! It was that awesome.

I went to go see the first showing of the day at 1:30 and the projector broke. So, the manager gave us free tickets and lets pick one of the next starting movies which was between Hall Pass and Just Go With It. I chose Hall Pass and it was freakin' hilarious. But, anyways, about Drive Angry 3D; William Fichtner is a great supporting character in this; he's
[Show spoiler]neither a good guy nor bad guy in this movie. He starts out evil in the opening and then once he learns why Nic Cage's character is on this mission, he becomes a protagonist to the story
. I thought that was pretty cool. Cage is great all around in this.

Quote:
In Drive Angry, Nicolas Cage plays a dead man with vengeance on the mind. In the first scene, he escapes from Hell in a muscle car. His badass character is, of course, named Milton, John Milton. See, after his death, his estranged daughter fell into a bad scene: a Satanic cult. She was murdered by the cult's leader, played by Billy Burke. His name is, yes, Jonah King. To confirm he's despicable, he uses the dead daughter's femur (!) as a cane and as a weapon. The cult has stolen Milton's infant granddaughter, who they plan to sacrifice on the night of the next full moon. Milton is in a race against time to save his last living relative. He's joined by a sexy, hard-living, and tough-as-nails waitress, Piper (Amber Heard). In hot pursuit is a mysterious supernatural being called "the Accountant" (William Fichtner), who aims to return Milton to perdition.

What horror vet Patrick Lussier (the 2009 My Bloody Valentine remake), serving as director and co-writer, has fashioned here is an unabashed and well-crafted trash extravaganza, overflowing with over-the-top muscle-car stunts, impalings, gunshot wounds, nude women, and fire-and-brimstone imagery. It never captures the down-and-dirty, midnight-movie grindhouse vibe as well as Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror or Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof (which had far more memorable car-chase action), but the fact the less reputable Lussier comes fairly close at times to matching those kings of the disreputable is impressive. The best sequence in Drive Angry might just be a well-staged (& mid-coitus) motel shootout.

The 3-D illusion, in which the film was shot (no post-production conversion nonsense here), is well-utilized for the most part. Lussier embraces the cornier side of 3-D, with objects, including bullets and bits of viscera, "coming at" the audience. It's fun and suits the tone of the film. What Lussier fails to overcome, however, is the unappealing dimming of the image. [...]

hopefully checking this out later

EDIT: Decided not to bother, it'll come down to something close to £10 just to watch it, I'll try and check it out later on in the week when it'll be cheaper.

Drive Angry 3D made....... $1.6 million dollars Friday making it set a record for worst box office opening for a 3D movie in over 1500 theaters.

I feel so bad for Nic.

Embarrassing number.

And it's a pity because the movie is fun. Although, these 'ironic' action and/or horror films almost always struggle. Shoot 'Em Up flopped. Slither barely registered in theatres. Snakes on a Plane didn't come close to living up to its early buzz. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World suffered a similar fate. Even Grindhouse was a financial disappointment.

Cage will rebound later this year. He has two very respectable titles on the horizon. One is Trespass with Nicole Kidman. The other is a thriller co-starring Guy Pearce and January Jones, from the director of Thirteen Days and The Bank Job.

It'll be good for his career to step away from the camp and the cheese for a while.

I feel bad for Amber Heard, Nic's financial troubles are his own fault.

Nic already has his paycheck. I doubt this film's financial underperformance will worsen his financial situation in any way.

I definitely didn't expect this to do well at all, but that's even lower than I expected it to do on opening day. I still plan on at least renting this though as it seems like it isn't the horrible movie I thought it could be judging by the halfway decent reviews it has gotten.

Saw it Saturday.

Over-the-top cheesiness, corny as hell and just plain weird in some parts.....

But a helluva good time if you can go along with it . It had some great action sequences, the 3D was great and just plain fun.

Check your brain in at the door.

Loved The Accountant character

I really wish that would happen. Everybody would hate the CC for that. I have a free ticket to DA3D, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Saw Hall Pass yesterday.

Saw this Saturday night.

It was a decent movie but got so dull after an hour and the only thing that saved it was the 3D.

The 3D for me was so good, one of the best i've seen so far.

4/5

I had a blast with this one, it's a shame it bombed the way it did.

Not a big fan of 3d but... The 3d was awesome! Definitely worth watching. The movie was a ton of fun with some great action. The only thing is I was expecting it to be a little crazier.
