Default Drive-in Movie Theaters: Then and Now

A nice little write-up by Time (along with a nice and perhaps nostalgic-for-some picture gallery) on the past and present state of an old American staple: the drive-in movie theater.

It would be interesting to take a poll asking who actually has a drive-in near their home.

We have one here in the Detroit area about 30 minutes from my house, but it's in a neighborhood where I wouldn't want my car to sit for more than a traffic light cycle.

Before: Van Nuys, CA has one but closed about 10 years ago.
Now: Replaced them with a new High School about 15 years later.

Dead West SF Valley drive ins:

San Val Drive in, Burbank
Pickwick Drive-In, Burbank
Winnetka 6 drive-In, Chatsworth
Van Nuys Drive-in
Sepulveda Drive-In, Van Nuys
Reseda Drive in
Canoga Park Drive in

http://www.drive-ins.com/

and that's just the West Valley. Grew up in Canoga Park in the 50's/60's and probably visited most of these.

Which is still there? We used to go to the Grand River and to the one on Michigan Avenue (in Belleville or Ypsi?) in the '80s.

I've also been to the Motor-Vu in Idaho Falls, but we had to leave before the feature (Beetlejuice) was over, because the good ol' boys in back started chucking beer bottles, and we had a new car at the time (Ford Probe).

Downtown Toronto has a drive-in (Hancock + Zohan are the features tonight).

It's a driving range by day, and a drive-in at dusk.

The only one around here left is the Ford-Wyoming Drive-In, on the corner of Ford Rd. and Wyoming in Detroit.

Here's a little info on the one on Michigan Avenue you're referring to:

3.5 Miles away we had one....... been there once... not a bad neighborhood, just don't go for one reason or another....... only time we went, "War of the Worlds", and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" were playing..... we went more for the "experience" rather than the movie..... I think going now (since we have an 8 month old) it'd be fun, but the theater is gone...... actually the land was purchased by my employer, and turned into "green space"

the one I used to go to as a kid has been converted into a flea market - every Saturday and Sunday you can walk the aisles and buy other peoples unwanted junk

I think one of the screens recently blew over in a big storm we had but I think the other is still there - concession stand remains open during the flea market too

How funny, we just moved to Idaho Falls, and I drove down Yellowstone Hwy today to see if it was still running - it's not :-(
