Default I think movie theaters will go the way of the arcade.......

Does anyone think that the movie theaters will die out slowly now that home theaters have surpassed in performance?

To me, this seems parallel to the video game industry. When video games first came out, arcades opened up all over place, allowing people to experience something they couldn't otherwise do at home.
But, as time went by, technology advanced, and eventually the home consoles have caught up and surpassed the arcades. Nowadays there aren't as many arcades around, and the ones that do
exist have the same games you could play at home.

The same thing appears to be happening with movie theaters. With the emergence of new mediums such as HD and Blu-ray, watching movies has become a better experience. The technology is better, not to
mention the fact that you avoid the overpriced tickets, overpriced food, and obnoxious people who talk with their cell phones.

Just my 2 cents.

I agreed. I hates to buy $10 ticket, $5 popcorn plus 1 refill, $3 Hotdog, $2 Large Drink all this for $20 per movie theatre.

I really hope that theaters won't be a thing of the past for these reasons:

- No matter how big your screen, its alway way WAY bigger in theaters
- No matter how High Def is your TV, it's way WAY higher in theaters (the original film is by definition the highest def version from which masters are made for DVD, Bluray etc ...)
- the Screen ratio in theaters is the real thing (2.40:1) Whereas your Wide Screen TV is only 1.78:1

As for the overpriced ticket, true in most cases. But not here where I live, the UGC has this subscription for unlimited access to any movie any time for only 17 Euros/month. which is roughly the price of two tickets.
In other words, for the price of two tickets i can go 10, 20 or 30 times a month to the movies to see anything I want

No it wont. Blockbuster movies make more and more each year surpassing 150M in the first weekend, and will keep getting higher. So not for at least 20 years. Something better will come out, like IMax having every movie

I think we'll be waiting awhile, but eventually you'll probably be right. Between the expense of the theater and the problems that come with crowds, cell phones, etc, it gets less and less appealing. I know Hollywood is losing cashflow yearly in the movie industry, but I'm curious whether or not it's losing cashflow across DVD/Blu/Digital.

I think movie theaters will go the way of the arcade.......

Its quite possible sometime down the road. There are small venues/theaters opening up that hold approx 30 people that serve drinks, wine, and dinner while you watch the movie. Waiters actually serve you. Who knows if this will take off or not, but...

When I saw this on the news today, they mentioned that even in economic down turns, the entertainment sector seems to ride the tides just fine with very little effect financially. People want their entertainment. During WW2, Movies were huge. People wanted to forget their troubles and have a little escapism from reality.

Imagine no theaters though. Everything, direct to video. No waiting for the theater run to finish. Never say never!

There will still be a demand to see movies in theaters, but I dont think they'll be as popular as they once were. People will still want to see the big blockbusters there, not to mention someplace to go out to.

nope, they aren't going anywhere. the studios and theaters make too much money off them.

plus perfromance wise I would say only about 5% of people have a setup that beats a theater.

on top of that, people want to see the movie on the big screen, hardly any home theaters can beat the smallest theaters in screen size.

and on top of that the movie comes out 6 months before it hits blu-ray, so you gotta wait if you don't go to the theater and for those of us who do both its a double dip for the studio.

The video quality, and in most cases the sound, depending if you have a system 5.1 or above

Several large cinemas have closed in my area in just that last few seasons. The arcades are still open, though.

funny you mention this, but I remember reading somewhere where they thought about releasing movies on disc the same time they hit the theaters. Sounds impossible I know, but I remember them toiling with the idea. I'll try to find the story on that and post it.

No, I don't think so... video arcades were a phenomenon that last for 10, perhaps 15 years in it's heyday. Movie theaters, in one form or another, have been around for, believe it or not, over 100 years. I think as long as they make best to stay on top of technology, the experience will never die.

i remember that too. i think it was approched when DVD began to take off didn't happen though, wouldn't expect it now.

i think its possible to do this now, but the studios make more money staggering the disc release a few months after the theatrical.

movie theaters wont go the way of the arcade but the movie industry wouldnt make thier 2.4mil in a weekend and then we would have to pay 100 bucks for a dvd and 200 for a blu.

I guess the 4 million pixels and massive screen, and actually getting out the house and seeing a current movie just wont surpass the 2 million pixels on a much smaller screen in your home. I will always love going to the movies, heck I still love going to the drive in. To be honest, i don't even care if it's the dollar theater.

It'll probably be a while. Most movie comes out in theater first before hitting the store shelf and some people just want to be the first to see it. Also, how many highschool, middle school teenager have a home theater at home. I don't think they can bring there girlfriends over and make out in the backrow.....
