My question is to you 2001 fans out there.
The scenes I'm talking about are the exterior space ship shots & not the 5/6 min. acid trip at the ending. Before you start flaming me, I'm still able to enjoy 2001 for what it is, I thoroughly love it. But sometimes I can help but think to myself that the shots "need" to look more realistic. After all Kubricks goal was to make it realistic. I know many of you are going to shoot this idea down, kind of like the "Casablanca colorized" thread. I personally would be interested in it, after all nothing of Kubrick's ideas and goals with this movie would be compromised by a slight "facelift" in my opinion. |

Why would you ever destroy a masterpiece? I mean look at Lucas he has totally butchered the SW masterpieces! Just leave stuff alone! If you want to see new effects then make a new film...
I just dont understand where this stuff is coming from. Do new special effects make a film better? No... |

How would you make it more "realistic"? Not with CGI, I hope. 'Cause CGI looks cold and lifeless to me. |

I'm talking about elevating the realism, I'm sure Kubrick would have wanted that if he had the resoures and the special effects at the time couldn't live up to it. It's still impressive though. |

For what purpose would you try and update some of the most stunning images in film. This is a slow-paced film, and the sequences and music fit quite well, although the score was not the first choice to begin with. Just call it, destiny.
The flyby of the Discovery is enough for me to say, that this is Demo material in my books. |

Man do I miss the days of original man made special effects and makeup (Star Wars, 2001, Blade Runner, An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, etc., etc.)
I understand the importance of today's CGI used in moderation (Gollum, King Kong) but I'm so sick of the over saturated use of CGI in todays films. |

The magic of this film is the fact it was made in 1968 and truly offered a glimpse of the future. You have to remember -- when this movie was filmed, no one had ever seen the earth from space.
It is a true work of art. To alter it would be a crime, imo. ![]() |

The early shots of the space station above the earth do not look realistic by modern standards; but, I generally don't like the idea or updating older movies. Sometimes, I can accept minor corrections such as hiding a wire. I also have no problems with rerendering CGI at higher resolutions using the same models etc. But, to me, dated special effects are part of the experience of watching older science fiction movies. If I want modern CGI and a "2001-like" experience, I will watch the first 20 minutes of WALL*E.
Of course, in another 50-60 years 2001 will enter the public domain and enterprising people can enhance the special effects all they want. |

The first American orbited the Earth in 1962. The Russians had done it earlier.

Actually, despite its age, 2001 has been cited by many, including home theater magazine reviewers, as a reference standard for demonstrating capabilities of high definition displays.
