Kubrick is dead right!? Why mess with the director's vision? The movie is perfect and tinkering with it will ruin the movie. Think about it, the movie has a very distinct look and "feel" to it. Changing anything on 2001 is not acceptable.

Lord no!!! This is one of the few classic movies that looks just as good today as it did back then... heck... 90% of it looks like it could have been filmed last year let alone decades ago.

CGI is bad news when overdone, and even moreso when used to 'enhance' classics... look what happened when George got turned loose with CGI. I agree it has it's applications and when used sparingly and well, it can be fantastic... but when it's the centerpiece of a movie... it's just bad news.

The beauty behind the special effects is that it's timeless. The hyperspace sequence at the end was created without any computer assistance, and will stand well in the test of time. No need to update

Thumbs down Leave 2001 alone

2001 was made by Kubrick... not Lucas. ie. He did the job right in the first place

Man do I miss the days of original man made special effects and makeup (Star Wars, 2001, Blade Runner, An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, etc., etc.)

I understand the importance of today's CGI used in moderation (Gollum, King Kong) but I'm so sick of the over saturated use of CGI in todays films.

The magic of this film is the fact it was made in 1968 and truly offered a glimpse of the future. You have to remember -- when this movie was filmed, no one had ever seen the earth from space.

It is a true work of art. To alter it would be a crime, imo.

The early shots of the space station above the earth do not look realistic by modern standards; but, I generally don't like the idea or updating older movies. Sometimes, I can accept minor corrections such as hiding a wire. I also have no problems with rerendering CGI at higher resolutions using the same models etc. But, to me, dated special effects are part of the experience of watching older science fiction movies. If I want modern CGI and a "2001-like" experience, I will watch the first 20 minutes of WALL*E.

Of course, in another 50-60 years 2001 will enter the public domain and enterprising people can enhance the special effects all they want.

The first American orbited the Earth in 1962. The Russians had done it earlier.

I have "The Making of Kubrick's 2001", "2001: Filming the Future", and have read the Cinefex article, and after studying this movie for 42 years, I still don't know how they did it!

Stanley Kubrick shot a 54 foot, 1/8 scale model on 65mm film with Special Effects by Douglas Trumbull and you want more realism?

Star Wars had a lot of technical flaws in its effects. The effects needed an upgrade. I still don't understand what all of this crap is about with fans getting so up in arms about Lucas making technical changes to his film fixing that have always bugged him for decades. It's not like he made major alterations to the story, unless you think seeing more of Mos Eisley makes a big dent in the story of the Rebellion against the Empire. The only one that makes a difference is at the end of Jedi with Jedi Anakin instead of older Anakin, but that is there to connect the two trilogies and give a sense of closure around the entire story. It makes sense.

If you saw the movie in the theater in 1977, held it dear to your heart all those years you would understand. If you didnt then you wont.

Oh and they didnt bug him for decades! They only bugged him when technology got better and better then he "could" change them. If there is one guy that has lied and reversed himself over the years in interviews it's Lucas. Anyway this is about 2001 so lets get this back on point.

Just saw this for the first time a few months ago and I loved it. I just bought it on Amazon the other day and can't wait to watch it again. Can't beat $9.50 for a masterpiece!

As for this nonsense about newer graphics, hellll nooo!

I didn't see the movies theatrically, but rest assured I held them dear to my heart for my childhood on VHS. I've been a fan for about as long as I can remember. Yet, I don't hold those original versions as some kind of unattainable piece of perfection as many fans do. They're movies. Ones that I love and care for a great deal and have affected me very much, but movies nevertheless. I don't own a piece of them. They aren't "my" movies. They're Lucas' films. He can change and adjust them to his liking as much as he wants. Kubrick did the same thing with his films, continually editing them and tweaking them, long after their theatrical life. The only difference is that Lucas chose to release his "complete" version for the world to enjoy and see again in theaters.

If I want to revisit those original versions for nostalgiac purposes, I have my old CBS/FOX VHS tapes and DVD's of the theatrical versions. But when I do a marathon or want to seriously watch the film, it will always be the latest version - Lucas preferred version. Because I respect him as a filmmaker and want to see "his" most complete version.

You're correct, but nevertheless they were things that he didn't like for those two decades until technology caught up to his visual imagination. I don't think it's a problem with him lying or reversing himself, it's just that technology and effects keep evolving, further giving him the opportunity to tweak and perfect his films to his liking as time passes.

The most stunning images in film? Yeah, maybe 40 years ago. Now I would just describe them as lackluster.

If someone wanted to polish them up a bit, it wouldn't bother me.

Im sorry you did not see them "when" they came out. Your view of them can and will never be the same as those that saw them in the theater at that time.
....it is a perspective that you will never experience. They are so much more than "movies" to a genearation....I won't start an argument here in this thread though but please feel free to create a new thread on this subject and we can discuss at length.

Lets get back to the topic as I wont discuss SW here in this thread anymore.

It will not be long before today's effects will look dated, what then, update all the films again and again. Leave it the way it is.
