On Demand is really taking off though. A lot of people use it and it's great.

I would love a movie to be available On Demand and at Best Buy a few weeks after opening in a theater.

This model isn't just about digital downloads.
I wouldn't, because I like movie theaters, and as someone else pointed out, if you cut down on the time that it's only available in theaters, then theaters will be forced to either raise ticket prices (not good) or go out of business (not good).

I'm glad movies don't take as long to hit home video today as they did when I was a kid, but I don't think they need to be even sooner. I don't think offering a movie on tons of platforms is going to get more viewers, as much as it's just going to spread the existing viewers around.

That's exactly it, if movie studios start coming up with 'released only on THIS download device for x amount of time' {or entirely} then we'll just end up with another format war, and we're still suffering from the last one.

Anyone who has any doubt on that, need only check out HDD, {or any website that doesn't have Blu in the url that deals with High def movie info} and see all the Blu-Ray naysayers out there.

The more the market for watching movies fractures with different players and different means of getting the movies, the worse off this will get. This isn't like gaming consoles where there is 2-4 major players at a time and people can buy more than one console to have in their living room, nobody wants 2-3 consoles, and 2-4 ways of watching movies, along with 2 different PVR's and an Apple TV, they wouldn't have room left in their living room with all the different boxes around their television.

They have this weird release strategy in Russia to combat piracy. They will release movies about less than a month after it's theatrical release. These DVDs are barebones and only have Russian dubbing on the disc. They do not contain any English audio.

Movies come out at a fast enough pace for me. This sounds like it would do more harm than good.

R5 rips are common on pirate sites. This method of combating piracy helped the pirates by giving them good quality rips long before a DVD-rip could be available. I've yet to see one without an English track on them, not sure if the pirates tacked it on or it came with it before hand, but it didn't stop much of anything outside of Russia.

They sync the English tracks to them. I've got some relatives in Iraq who go to some bootleg stores and the whole process was explained to them. Which is why on some of the bootlegs that are seen have different language opening credits but have English audio.

Plus, there was a few bootleg shops in Hawaii that sold bootleg Asian films. Man, that pissed me off when I went into one and bought one. I was jonesing for some Jackie Chan stuff and when I popped the first one in, I was shocked at how horrible the quality was.

Plus, with the R5 DVDs, there's two Russian stores that I know of; Ozon and Bolero, but they don't ship outside of Russia. If they did, I'd be buying all those R5 releases no matter if it only contained Russian dubbing.

That doesn't sound like a really good way of doing things, especially for someone who's trying to secure finances for his own movie.

I like movie theaters too but only for certain movies. There are sometimes i'd rather avoid a huge crowd and enjoy the movie at home.

But also, some movies I wanted right away on Blu-ray right after watching it in theaters. Like Paranormal Activity, that would have been great to have right away on BD after seeing it so I could find out more and see the multiple endings.

Look how long Star Trek took to come out also. That was a long wait. Same for the Hangover. I understand they want to make the most of the holiday season but still, I would have bought the Hangover had it come out sooner. Star Trek especially was guaranteed to sell if it came out quickly.

That's why I really praise HDNet for taking the chance with companies to show movies early. The same goes for Steven Soderbergh who for two of his films has thrown out the traditional release model out the window. Sure they were not financial successes but both were critically acclaimed. It's going to work perfectly for the smaller films first and then when the profits start to increase for the smaller films with this model it will spread.

Look at the experimental model used for Paranormal Activity. They are trying it again with Boondock Saints 2. If this takes off it will greatly effect the way that movies are released as well.

The movie industry needs to adapt to the changing climate of it's fans. They have been out of touch for a while now. Especially the theater industry. When I goto Arclight I know I am paying a premium because I get assigned seating and ushers and a bar. Which is why you pay $16. But if I goto a local AMC with crappy seats and crap food why do I have to pay $14?

It's a long wait because it takes time to print off millions of copies of Star Trek on DVD and Blu-Ray, not because they want to delay it until Christmas. Summer movies that do well typically take an amount of time to print off the number of copies that they need in order to fill demand.

Probably because Steven Soderbergh movies rarely are super-smash hits at the box office.

And the reason why the model works for smaller films, because the studios have LESS to print off on DVD/Blu-Ray so it takes them less time to do so.

Both movies with small budgets.

Or the fans, who are 'gimmie gimmie, I want it NOW' need to adapt and have patience.

You'd have to ask those specific companies why they do what they do. It's not the studios who do so. But you can bet that those companies will take issue to studios undercutting them when it comes to giving them time to show the movies in theaters.

BTW: For the Arclight, does that extra $2 get you free drinks? If not, how much do the drinks cost?

it would be cool if you could come out of a movie that you really enjoyed and pick up the blu right there before heading home.

I wanted that for The Hangover. That would have been great to watch again.

Watchmen was a lot to absorb in one sitting. Even if you read the comic. And now there is another version coming out on BD!?!
