Default Changing the movie release model.

There was an interesting report on NPR yesterday about how Hollywood wants to change the movie release model. Instead of you buying a movie, then renting or buying it again later, you pay a higher premium your rights to it. So say you buy a high price ticket then later can download the movie for free. Also, the delay from theater to download would be weeks instead of months.

With movie sales declining Hollywood seems to be looking for more profitable ways to make money. What are your thoughts?

Also, studios are pushing to shorten the time between a movie being in theaters and when it hits other forms of media.

I think theatrical expenses had a hand in this. In other words how much movie theaters charge now days is absolutely ridiculous you add 6 more bucks to the tix price and you could just own the movie on DVD.

The idea doesn't look like it will help studios to generate more money. I think they will lose more money. Let some people pay the premium while the rest just wait for the online release for free.....

I'd pay 40+ for movies to get them early. Granted I wouldn't just buy random movies anymore I'd put a little more research into it.

But to get say the Dark Knight or a favorite movie 4 to 7 weeks after it comes out (only if it was blu-ray quality) for $40-80(or less) I'd do it.

Well it's not just through online downloading, it's also for on demand sites.

So let's say Shutter Island were to come out next week. Then after 1 month, the film hits On Demand and digital rentals/download. So you could pay $20 for the movie ticket and then rent or download the movie free after. Or watch it on demand for free too.

Oh I don't know that I'd do that, I'd pay more to rent movies if they were streaming into the home(like your example shutter Island), but quality wise I'd still pay for the best. I wouldn't settle for streaming. I might view more movies instead of waiting till they hit blu-ray.

That's exactly what is interesting about it. If a movie were to come out a mere 4 week or possibly less after hitting a theater the possible ways for consumers to view it would increase.

Theaters are very much against it, rightfully so cause it eats their profits, but the studios would bank.

I really dont think that would help them make more money, but since this age more and more things are done on the internet so I could be wrong

And I'd still buy most movies on blu-ray like I'd watch transformers simply because it was on demand that early, and then buy it when it came on blu-ray.

I think 20 would be my limit for a 24 hour rental.

Don't think of it just in terms of the internet and downloading. Think of it as all forms of media.

Say Spiderman 4 came out. Then after 1 month, the movie hit On Demand, Netflix streaming, PS3/360 download, and DVD/Blu-ray. Wouldn't that increase the movies potential to create more revenue?

The movie is still fresh in peoples minds and people that love it will buy it and people who didn't goto the theater will rent or stream it.

Well I think that wouldn't work to well cause I wouldn't rent it if it came on blu-ray

BUTTT. If it went spidey 4 comes out, then 3 weeks later its on all the on demand and streaming services, then 3 months later its on blu-ray, then they'd get me both times

Would you buy it though on Blu-ray right away if it came out that fast?

YES and thats where they could charge me a real premium I'd pay 30-100(only best movies) to get blu-rays that quick.

Or they could get me with the rental (maybe more then once, if it were to take another 3 months to get it on blu-ray) and then get me to buy it.

I'd do either of those.

I'd be willing to pay much more for the convenience and privacy of it all. + it would be much cheaper to spend 20-30 renting say spidey 4 at home and bringing a date over then 15+ a ticket there and 20+ for drinks and crap, then gas.

If they changed the movie release model it would kill all theaters. Hardly anyone would go to the theater if they knew they could watch it at home a month later. Theaters would shut down in every town and the film's box office would drop greatly.

That's the other idea they mentioned that Hollywood needs to get on board with. Specializing to an audience.

Say for instance, you are interested in Spiderman 4. They offer a special Spiderman club for $20.

With the Spiderman club, you get to goto an early screening for the film 2 WEEKS before the actual release date. The screening is $20. Then, 3 weeks later you get a $5 coupon for the release of the film on Blu-ray but the Blu-ray costs $30.

Studio makes $65 from the person, minus other fees and stuff, but that's not bad.

True, and then they'd have even less control over video taping, video cameras all that.

Interesting idea, but I would still wait to have the blu-ray in my hands.

Not interested to pay more just to get a movie earlier. I am not in that much of a hurry to see a movie, there is always something else to watch. I would not mind to wait 3 or 4 months more and get it just at a regular ordinary price

I am not that much in a hurry and specialy not paying more in order to get 2 months before everyone else.
