Vanilla Sky and The Ring are two of my all-time favorite films.

sure, there are tons of crappy American remakes, and there are tons of crappy foreign remakes. why the need to brand this an American issue? I dont' care where the remake is made (US, UK, China, India, or Pluto) - 99% of the time I won't watch it or enjoy it.

It's not branded as a american issue, that was not my intention anyways, it's just that american remakes have more exposure.
This thread is about americanized remakes specifically.

This thread is just about the americanized remakes is all I'm saying.
gotcha agreed that american remakes do get more exposure. i do try endlessly to get my friends to watch foreign films, often to no avail.

The Vanishing was vastly inferior compared to the original Dutch Spoorloos and to make things even worse, Hollywood hired the same director to do the remake and radically changed the climax of the movie.

I too agree that The Ring was far superior to Ringu. I know most ppl on this site detest the film, which admittedly is a bit hokey after it has been seen a number of times, but I think the direction and distinct mood that Verbinski sets forth is excellent.

One film I am absolutely not looking forward to seeing the American remake of is The Lives of Others, which is rumored to be somewhere in the pipeline (who knows if this rumor is accurate).

If we can throw Chicago in there, I'm all for it.

The Ring remake I thought was better than the original

Anyone remember that NBC show Coupling? That one was interesting, because it was based off of a BBC show of the same name, and the BBC show was supposed to have been based on NBC's Friends. Did the remake come full circle?

That reminds me of Insomnia, a 1997 Norwegian film remand in 2002 by Christopher Nolan.
