gotta mention: Dicaprio in Blood Diamond

"Aaarcchhhher...A R C H E RRRRRRRR" (cringed like i just got kicked in the #$%@)

however, i did get used to it after 15 min and my brain somehow accepted it. great performance, just that initial accent hit me like a freight train.

I agree with Anna Paquin in X-Men. I was semi-atrocious.

How about Bale in Public Enemies? I thought he knocked it out of the park. I'm from Texas, and he's not even from the US, and he can do it a whole lot better than I can.

I haven't seen too many mentioned in this thread yet but I find it funny when people say someones southern accent is horrible but the actor was born and raised in the south.

Renee Zellwegger is from Katy, Texas and Miley Cyrus is from Franklin, Tennessee.

Most Southerners actually speak with little accent, and in a way that closely resembles "midwestern TV anchor".

The drawl is common in Texas, northern Louisiana, and the southern-most parts of Mississippi and Alabama. Elsewhere in the South it is used by some of the old upper class (and wannabes). This is the language of the Southern Belles.

The twang is common in appalachia, and in trailer parks throughout the south. This accent is generally associated with poor education and is frequently avoided (although quite common among NASCAR drivers).

The New Orleans accent among the working-class and middle-class is very similar to a Brooklyn Accent. Among the Upper class and wannabes, the accent is more like the drawl (or Harry Connick-like). There are no Cajuns in New Orleans, except in the movies. The Cajun accent is quite different and prevalent in South Louisiana.

The accent in Charleston SC is heavily influenced by African language, and is frequently unintelligible by non-Charlestonians (including many people from South Carolina).

Hollywood rarely makes these distinctions, and uses an exaggerated drawl. Which rarely sounds realistic at all.

I disagree. Just pronounce everything correctly.

Miley tends to overdo her accent on the "Hannah Montana" show. Her non-acting voice is closer to the modern Southern accent.

Of course, all acting is overdone on Disney Channel.

When to school and lived in Memphis, also lived in New Orleans. Love a woman with a southern accent, but unfortunately they are horrible in Hollywood. I have friends from all over the South and after a while I got good at picking out accents (where someone was from) because of it.

Most actresses just can't get the twang right, most guys just end up sounding dumb or put too much 'well-ah-do-declareuh!'ness too it.

What many think of as a Southern accent is usually a rehash of previous voice stereotypes. Just like how my Southern friends were amazed that I "Have no accent" because they were expecting me (as a New Yorker... *ahem* WESTERN New Yorker) to have a Brooklyn/Jersey/Italian(a la Sopranos)/Jerkey Boys accent.

Which I do NOT have.

But, if you see it in the movies, it's GOT to be real, right?

Cheers,

Doc

P.S.

Oh yeah. Cage is the worst... at EVERYTHING!!!

I always have a problem with people pushing the heavy southern accents in movies and TV. I was born and raised in Tennessee and carry no accent whatsoever. I cannot place some of the ones I hated, but I do know one that I think it the best I have heard.

Gary Cooper in Sgt York was a dead on Eastern Tennessee mountain man accent.

Someone brought up A Time To Kill. Off topic but... was it just me or did NO ONE in that movie own air conditioning?!? (Not that I minded seeing Ashley Judd and Sandra Bullock sweaty!!)

Ewan McGregor in Big Fish was another terrific example!!

This is very common in Rural areas where older homes aren't equipped with Central Air and Heating. Most new houses built in these areas will have Central Air but if you watched the film, Matthew and Ashley had an old house.
