When I mentioned 2009, I did so because there were numerous movies I really enjoyed. Historically 1939 is regarded as the best year for movies and I can't disagree with that. When you look at the production value of The Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind, you can't but feel awed by the production value of those films. 70 years ago and movies from that year remain very relevant to this day...that's very hard to top.

I guess it surprises me that anyone would name ANY year in the 2000s, much less the 1990s for the single greatest year in movies. But of course, there is no right or wrong answer.

And as for your second point...
Old? yes some of you are old and pretentious! One thing I can't stand is a film snob!

I'm not as familiar with older movies, so personally I would have to go with 1994: Shawshank, Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump are all all-time favourites for me. I can literally watch these three 10 times a month and not get bored of them. And I have to say 2009 was a pretty damn solid year for cinema, but we must also realize that there was a ton of crappy blockbuster movies made that year as well.

Personally, I never did get to see one of Roger Ebert's film festival salutes to 1982--

But I can at least hide behind E.T., Blade Runner, Gandhi and The Verdict while doing my own small part to make others aware of it:

Of course, the rest of 1963 wasn't as solid but I think the strength of those two alone propel it into consideration.
Think you can move your vote to 1962 then which is quite a sold year. Since both those titles were Christmas week releases.

Which you can add to that year Dr. No being the first bond movie.
The Longest day which has one of those great studio day casts.
Lolita, The Manchurian Candidate, The Man who Shot Liberty Valance, The Music Man, The Miracle Worker. All cosider very solid films and more.

Strange nobody have mentioned 2001 yet. In terms of # of movies that have received 10/10 from me, this year is clearly the winner.

Donnie Darko
Fellowship Of The Ring
Spirited Away
Amélie From Montmartre
Shrek
Monsters, Inc.
Mulholland Dr.

as well as a few lesser known gems;

Elling
My Sassy Girl
The Experiment

This is the best years, IMHO, in order;

2001, 1994, 2008, 1991, 2007, 1999....and so on.

AHEMcoughchoke!...Uh, do the words "The Massacre of Summer '01" ring a bell? They sure seemed to with studios at the time.

That catastrophic summer (of Apes, AI, Pearl Harbor, Atlantis, Tomb Raider, Jurassic3, Final Fantasy, etc.) was literally an industry game-changer, in that it taught corporate studios to know real fear and bafflement of how to reach the audience, and feel the earth slip out from beneath their smug marketing-driven feet for the first time in their lives. I remember the PBS documentary three months later, asking 'What happened??? "
In terms of quality, I can think of better years.

Quite possibly. Still doesn't change the fact that this year holds the most favorite movies for me personally.

This is where the root problem lies as far as I concerned. So many people want to judge things by what their favorite movies are not as the works that the movies are.

There are many movies that I like personally but would not even consider them as some of the greatest movies. Where there are also movies I consider among the greatest ever made that personally I donot care for.

I know one thing I look at on any movie has it stood the test of time. Any and I do many any movie that is under 10 and I personally think closer to 20 years should not even be though of as a greatest movie. Yes it might be a great movie but it needs time to movie into that "ist" part. And that goes even more so with years of movies.

There have been movies at the time of release that have been just trounced, yet through time they have become some of the best loved works.
As well as ones that have gone the opposite way.

I'd agree with 1939. But... what about 1993?

Jurassic Park
Schindler's List
The Fugitive
Philadelphia
Tombstone
The Nightmare Before Christmas

Other notables from that year:
Mrs. Doubtfire
Falling Down
The Piano
Sleepless in Seattle
Groundhog Day
The Sandlot

We can all point to years...but what I think would be more intersting to know is what is the most important year for you personally. A year in film that you actually lived through as saw first hand. Not just a year that your favorite films came out.
