I just found out I'm having all 4 pulled on Thursday. I'm dreading it like the plague. Been avoiding it my entire life. Now, I saw the oral surgeon (who was as nice as could be) and told me that, on a scale of 1-10, this was a 1 - as easy as it could get.

Famous last words? I always think the worst so I never think it's that simple.

Of course, i have my sister texting me "You have no idea what kind of pain you will be in. Not an easy thing. They punctured my sinus cavity when I had mine!"

I had compacted wisdom teeth on the top and bottom. For several years the skin/gums would re-grow over the teeth and break again over and over. They put so much pressure on my teeth they eventually caused one of the back molars to crack. I avoided getting them pulled for years because of the OMG YOU ARE GOING TO BE IN SO MUCH PAIN!!! comments. I finally had it done and it was pretty much pain free. I had to eat soft food for a few days and took care to not get any dry sockets. After that, easy peasy. You may be a little sore but they will give you some decent pain medications and you should be fine.

Good luck with the surgery. I hope you have a similar experience.

I had some of mine out in February. It was kind of traumatizing in the sense that the oral surgeon was really aggressive when taking mine out, but there was little to no pain involved because of the local anesthesia, just a lot of pressure applied which felt (and sounded) uncomfortable. The whole process really takes just a few mins once the anesthetic kicks in. They also gave me an anti-anxiety injection (Ativan I believe). Not sure if that's common practice, but it was pretty awesome feeling for the next few hours after the extractions. You can perhaps request this if it's not offered.

Afterwards there was minor pain, and quite a lot of bleeding for two days. Just make sure to keep pressure on the extraction sites after to make sure you form blood clots, and don't take any vasodilators like aspirin before either. Place ice on the outside of your cheek by the sites to keep swelling down for 2-3 days.

Another thing to be wary of are dry sockets. These apparently cause extreme pain that most painkillers can't touch. Make sure not to smoke, use a straw, or spit much for the first week or so. If you are concerned about this (which I really was) go to any drugstore and pickup a "Toothache Relief Kit". Believe it or not the stuff included in it (Eugenol or Clove Oil) is better at relieving dry socket pain than Tylenol 3's. Dry sockets are pretty uncommon though, and are easily remedied with a return trip to the surgeon (he or she will pack it with eugenol and put some covering material over it to prevent food from getting in)

Really though, it's not that bad. It's more psychological than physical. If you have any questions feel free to ask me here, or PM

i had one of mine taken out a couple years ago. i had a molar in front of it that was decaying and it was because the wisdom tooth behind it had come in at an angle and had caused it to crack.

my dentist made the appointment with the oral surgeon for me. i went in, they hit me with the anesthetic and it seems like only a few seconds later i was waking up.i was delirious as hell from that and had to be helped to the car.

they gave me a prescription for vicodin and i only had to take a couple of them through the next couple days. the only pain i had was from the swelling and my jaw was a bit sore from the operation, but i didn't have any sharp pain from it at all. i slept a good bit for about 3 days so i was well rested when the swelling went away.

i really think that if your wisdom teeth start to bother you with pain, you should definitely get them taken out if you can. putting up with that pain will only get worse.

i still have the other 3 and my dentist told me i should only think about getting them removed if they start to bother me. my mom still has all 4 of hers.

You know, I didn't realize that I created this thread. That was in 2010, I didn't get them pulled until last October. It sucked.

I don't know how old you are, but the earlier you get it done the better. I put it off for the better part of twenty + years. I had one pulled in my late twenties and it was fine. I had the other three pulled last year, 42 now, and it was painful. My surgeon asked why I waited so long. After I told him, he told me to prepare for pain. He said it's not so bad when you are younger. I must of went back quite a bit to get the herbal packs they put on to ease the pain where the teeth were. Every two days if it came out, which was often. Good luck....

Wow they actually put you under? For me it was just local needles to numb the area.

Oh I'm gonna be out. We already discussed it. That's not a question.

I'm 37. I'm not looking forward to this.

What types of stuff did you guys eat over the next few days?

Oddly enough, this list says I can have meat, so long as it's soft...

I did the whole ice cream, chicken noodle soup thing for 2 days. After that I ate regular food. It all depends on the pain and swelling.

What about the noodles in the soup? Doesn't that get caught?

I had all four of mine taken out about 6 years ago when I was 19. They did put me under, and don't remember having any kind of problem. I guess it did kind of suck having to keep gauze in my mouth for about a day or so, until the bleeding stopped.

Nope. I used my spoon to cut them in smaller pieces so I didn't slurp. Plus anything you drink will wash it down.

One thing I ended up doing with some of mine was putting a moist tea bag (Lipton black tea) against the extraction to speed up the clotting process. The tea has something called tannins inside which are great art tightening up tissue, and this good for stopping the bleeding. Works for other minor wounds too.

Thanks to everyone here for their support and advice. It actually wasn't that bad at all. I had a friend escort me home on the subway but I probably could have done it alone. I was slightly out of it but not nearly as bad as I thought I would be. I've been living off of Ice cream, ice pops, drinks and soup since thursday. The pills are making me a bit wonky, but that's to be expected.
Not a ton of pain. There was a good amount of blood, but that stopped after the first few hours. The ice packs REALLY helped. The doctor told me that pulling out one of the teeth knocked out one of my fillings on the tooth right next to it...so he put a temporary one in there and I have to get that replaced.
And now it's mostly just a real soreness in my jaw. The upper ones don't bother me. It's just the lower.
