I live in europe and I work in consumer electronics. In the past two quarters Philips & LG combined haven't sold as many LCD-tvs as Samsung. The quality of Philips products *really* went downhill in the past few years. Technology-wise Philips is a pretty innovative brand (esp. LCD-tvs), but it's the end product that counts (Quality-wise no where near a Samsung). I've had more broken Philips LCD tvs than of all the other brands combined.

And don't even get me started on Sony! lol. Their U2000-series (26", 32" and 40" models) had to be withdrawn from the market due to defective DVB modules. And what freaks me out the most is their outrageous price policy. All models of the U- P- and S-series are fitted out with cheap noname panels and sold at ridiculously high prices.

Sharp tvs are sweet, but still far behind Samsung, Philips and Sony over here. Not because they are of lower quality or didn't live up to expectations, merely due to shortages. Consider Sharp was the first to build FullHD/100Hz LCD tvs...

I was born and raised in Europe and still go back often, so I know what's going on there. I grew up with brands like Philips, Siemens, Grundig, Fischer and to me and my family they always meant good quality products.

Just because companies go through highs and lows that doesn't mean I will abandon their products. Honestly, I yet to have any issues with Philips, so far. So, either I am the luckies person who owned one of their products, or they're really not as bad as you make them seem.

Make it Samsung! Great reviews, and the best quality that isn't the most expensive. Probably hundreds of dollars cheaper than it Sony counterparts.

Of course I'm just speaking of my own experience. I'm glad you never had any problems with Philips.

But note that approximately 30-35% of all Philips products we sell are bound to fail, especially in consumer electronics. No other brand has a failure rate that high, with the exception of Grundig, which we no longer stock, various no name brands and Sony after the U-series fiasco. Not only is it unpleasant for the consumer, also for the retailer who has to deal with the angry consumer, often complicated warranty processing cycles and administrative work.

Good to know someone still remembers Siemens. Our first color tv was a Bildmeister. It's still somewhere in our garage collecting dust. Sadly we had to replace it after almost 25 years as there were no more spare parts available when it broke. It was the f*cking sweetest crt tv we ever had.

Thumbs up Sharp Aquos!!!

I viewed quite a few brands before I purchased mine, Sony Samsung and Sharp. But I felt that Sharp had the best overall PQ to price ratio. Best bang for the buck.

I've had my Sharp since February & I haven't had any problems at all. Its great for BD's & PS3 games. Right now, Amazon has the 42" Aquos on sale for $1350.

I recently bought a new hdtv, and after tons of research and looking around at stores and reading reviews, I think the following brands are the best choices: Samsung, Sony, and Sharp (the three S's I guess lol). In that order, actually. In the end I was choosing between a Sony and a Samsung, and the higher contrast of the Samsung with its lower price tag really looked like the best option for me.

Good luck!
