is it worth lot moolah?
If you enjoy nature type shows and seeing the beauty of the earth in ways never thought possible, then yes... well worth every penny. I love mine.

As I have said before, when you watch a movie and see something like thousands upon thousands of swarming insects, birds, or bats... you are like. WOW - that's cool. But we know it's still CGI.

On Planet Earth I saw a number of things that made my jaw drop and eyes pop. Not because I saw a million swarming flying creatures, but because they were frikken real! It just brings it to a whole new level. In my opinion, better than any effects movie you have seen simply because it is real. The time lapse sequences are incredible.

God bless the people behind filming Planet Earth.

Sadly, Planet Earth is probably going to be the last documentary of it's kind. You know, before the world heats up, boils, floods and all that good jazz.

But seriously, it might be a collectors item one day because of mans need to dominate shit. Hopefully it does not happen, but man will never change

No, no. They would just make a sequel, "Planet Earth: End of Days".
Narrated by Arnold Schwarzengger.

Arnold: As you can see here in dis picture, all forms of life have been Terminated. Da birds no longer chirp. Da grass has turned brown. And all of you are realizing just how annoying my monotone can be.

David Attenborough is the Planet Earth. As one of the Earth's foremost Naturalists, he is uniquely qualified to narrate this great series. Does anybody remember the widely acclaimed "Life on Earth" series that he did years ago?

That being said, its on to the technical....

The transfer is generally good IMO. Planet Earth suffers badly from noise in some scenes (as was mentioned earlier), as well as from notable and repetitive posterization effects. Audio is nothing to write home about either. Still, Those Incredible Vistas, when properly shown, are absolutely mind blowing. My copy just arrived and we got through the first 2 episodes last night. Great family film; my 5 & 3 year olds were glued to the screen. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest!

I can barely see the white noise pulsing on the dark shadows of those few scenes on my 1080p ( I actually have to be looking for it) because I have the blacks calibrated for the proper overall image 2.2 gamma tone curve adjusted for my dark viewing conditions

So which version has the disks in their own individual case? I’ve read that the one that is bundled all together has the problem of the disks sliding around.

I was also getting what appeared to be noise in some other scenes. A good example of this was the aerial shot of seals swimming under the water in "From Pole to Pole" (just before the shot showing them swimming inside waves). The surface of the water looked very "grainy", but of course that's impossible with a HD digital source so I assumed it was also noise.

Every real image has grain or noise, even Kodachrome 25 (a "grainless" color film emulsion famous for many years) or Tech Pan (same, B/W), or from digital imagers, it's visibility depends on it's amplitude and/or magnification

3) Region B BBC/2 Entertain - Attenborough narration, with a couple of extras and 5 discs (October) 25p/50i most likely?

Since I don't have the Discovery version I can't confirn if there is a diference in content but I have the idea that it might seem shorter because it's could be running at 50i standards converted to 60i as the US broadcast could have been. The BBC/Warner Region A is at 24p (I compared the running times and the content to the PAL DVD version which I have, and content wise nothing was missing in the Warner Region A from the program itself)
right... I just found region B Planet Earth by D Attenborough.
I heard the UK version is 1080p, but I saw at HMV today, it's 1080i. I want to buy the 1080p UK version, and not sure how many versions out there. Help.

It says 1080i on the box, but I have the UK version, and the PS3 plays it as 24p, i.e. my TV says it is receiving a 24p input.

I can't compare with other versions, but it looks a little disappointing to me. Some shots are stunning, but you can really see the difference in quality of source from shot to shot, some look quite soft. If you get up close you can see loads of compression artifacts from the approx 20Mbps VC-1 encode. The audio is only 448kbps DD 5.1. And they missed off the 10 min behind the scenes features that were shown when they were broadcast on UK TV, so each ep is only 50 mins long rather than the original 60 mins. I thought the behind the scenes features added a lot to it, gave you a much greater appreciation of how hard many of the shots were to obtain, it's tragic to not have them on the discs. At least I still have my SD TV recordings for those.

I compared the Blu-ray to my SD TV recordings, and the doubling or so of resolution was clear to see in the small amount of material I compared.

Personally I'd rather they'd charged £10 extra for the Blu-ray and used 5 x BD50s instead of 5 x BD25s, and used the space for lossless audio, higher bitrate AVC video, and kept the 10 min behind the scenes features with each ep.

But do you have the US BBC (UK narrator) version (which is totally different to the US Discover (Weaver narration) version), or the UK BBC (UK narrator) version? The UK BBC is supposed to have some sort of extras that the US BBC version doesn't have. Just want to make sure, because when people say the UK version they might be referring to the US sold UK version, and that might be different from the UK sold UK version?

I've rented them all and I do plan to eventually buy it. I couldn't really afford it but now since the price has dropped a bit and I will be getting some money soon I probably will
