I did not buy the disc but I looked at the back of it when I was in Best Buy and I can confirm that it has those same short, bland featurettes that they threw on tons of 100th Anniversary releases. I am also pretty certain that Universal borrowed Criterion's transfer back for that 100th AE DVd, which looked spectacular.

I can tell you that I think the Universal release looks very good indeed. To my eye, it looks much like the Criterion screen caps. Again, I don't have the Criterion version and I don't claim them to be the same...but my eyes can't discern an obvious difference just on those caps.

The disc shows some very mild edge enhancement but it's much less than most other Universal releases and not intrusive (and I'm very sensitive to EE). Moderate grain and excellent color are present.

If you don't already have the Criterion release, then I think this is a very pleasing alternative. I see no significant problems with the Universal disc.
Thanks! I guess I will get the Universal release then.

The Criterion Blu-ray is currently priced at nineteen dollars and change at Barnes & Noble this month, due to the half-off of all Criterion titles sale.

Thanks for the pic. I was wondering what extras it had. I was thinking about picking it up for U&S but I love extras too much. I would rather pay little more and get the criterion edition for the audio commentary.

I'm a few days late but I just got around to double-checking something (don't worry, it's good news).

When I watched CHARADE, I didn't really pay attention to the sound format so I wasn't sure what to say when asked if it was lossless.

I looked at the package and was a bit disappointed to see it said Dolby Digital and even the disc art had Dolby Digital printed on the disc itself. But that seemed to be at odds with some things I'd read so I was confused.

However, I played the disc again last night and it is in fact DTS-HD Master Audio. If you go to the disc set-up menu, the audio shows as DTS-HD Master Audio complete with the DTS-HD MA logo. It showed up at DTS-HD MA on both the player and receiver display.

I guess Universal not only recycled the DVD extras, they recycled some of the DVD package art as well.

For $7.99 after U&S at BBY, purchasing the Universal disk is a no-brainer.

Has anyone compared the new Universal disc to the Criterion yet?

Same transfer?

May be at Best Buy today on my lunch hour and would definitely pick up the new disc for $7.99 with U&S if it's a new transfer.

I don't have the Criterion blu, but the dvd version, so this is definitely an upgrade for me

I'm hoping to find a comparison by someone who has both and ideally posts caps.

Sounds like nobody has both. I may just pick up the new disc myself to check it, if it's identical I can always give it to a friend since it'll only cost $7.99.

There's a reviewer at Amazon with the new Universal Blu, the CC Blu, and two unspecified DVD versions. His opinion is that Universal Blu edges out the CC just slightly. Saying that is sacrilege around these parts, but I'm only relaying their opinion.

Good to know. It's my favorite film of all time. I've owned countless versions. If there's even a reasonable chance this is not the same transfer and is in any way improved, I'm picking it up before the sale ends.

I will attempt to get the Universal BD @ BBY with U&S. ($12.99-$5) Hope it is in stock in stores since Express Lane with U&S is YMMV.

Picked this up today for $7.99 at BBY with U&S. =) I was pleasantly surprised to unexpectedly find this gem. I had no idea it came out.

Just watched it. Great transfer for a 50 year old and great movie.

I've watched about 1/3 of the movie to check out the quality of the release (will watch the movie this weekend) and am happy to say it looks pretty decent. I would say it looks pretty comparable to the dvdbeaver screen caps of the the Criterion blu-ray. I have the Criterion DVD version as well and the colors seem more balanced on this one. The audio is DTS-HD MA mono, but I feel it could have been tweaked a little better which is really the only knock on the disk. Although the transfer is not as strong as say, Breakfast at Tiffany's or some of the earlier Bonds, it is still a really strong Universal title and an easy recommendation considering its price point.

I'm glad to see it's a solid release PQ wise for people who never got the Criterion release. Hopefully this means it will get even just a slightly wider audience on Blu-ray now. Charade definitely deserves it.

Whether it's true or not that the Universal edges out the Criterion release ever so slightly, I'm just going to stick with my Criterion release. I'm not being a Criterion fanboy or anything. I love the film, but I just don't care to buy it over again. I also doubt it includes any special features since the commentary is a Criterion exclusive.

I realize this post is kind of divided between positive and negative. In the end, it's good that it's getting another release. I was just stating reasons why I won't be getting it.

As has been stated in this thread, the disc includes a featurette about Carl Laemmle, a featurette about Lew Wasserman, and a trailer.

Sorry. I haven't read a whole lot about the Universal release in here.
