Super 8 should be number 1 this week but there's no way Super 8 is number 1 next week with Green Lantern opening, and I doubt it will be number 2 with Jim Carrey's penguin movie which will surely get big numbers from families.

Green Lantern is tracking big...over $50M for its initial weekend. Super 8 will be one of those movies that just hold very well over the Summer. Bidesmaids has not lost a theater since it openend five weeks ago, now that is one profitable movie, even though I will probably never see it...not even on Blu. Anyways, people have high expectation for X-Men: FC, but it will have a hard time getting over the $160M domestic mark....

Since we always know that the #1 movie each week especially in the summer is the movie opening that weekend maybe the poll should be voting on how much $$ it will make for that weekend.

Just picking the #1 movie is insanely too easy.

Good suggestion. I'll change the poll for next week. Update for Super 8...not a very impressive start, but it is a family movie and 12 am showings will not do very well:

6/10 Update: Super 8's Twitter-sponsored sneaks at 324 locations yielded approximately $1 million on Thursday. Paramount Pictures said that over 100,000 people participated, and the studio is hoping that they spread positive word-of-mouth. Additionally, Super 8's midnight launch rang in at an estimated $500,000 at 1,200 locations

FIRST BOX OFFICE: 'Super 8' On Target For About $11M Friday and $30M Weekend

FRIDAY 6:30 PM: These very early North American grosses do not include the $1 million which the Bad Robot/Amblin/Paramount movie Super 8 from JJ Abrams and Steven Spielberg made from Thursday's sneaks in about 335 theaters. Everyone is very skeptical of the reputed $50 million cost but that's Paramount's claim and the studio is sticking to it. Today's release went into 3,379 locations. Refined numbers and full analysis tonight.

Wrong. He was there with JJ Abrams "IF" Abrams wanted to confer with him, but he was a Producer here, nothing else. Now if you were to say Abrams was clearly going after a 70's period Spielberg-looking film, then you'd be right.

So depressing. I really wanted to see this movie do better...Hopefully word of mouth will keep this a float at the box office. It deserves the praise and recognition. If it doesn't, then I'm afraid we've lost all hope that filmmaking will ever be as great it was in 80's.

Dude - relax.

Remember, X-MEN: FC "just" opened last week, which will take $$$$$ from SUPER 8. Pirates 4, Hangover II, KFP 2, Bridesmaids, are ALL still doing pretty good numbers. IF it were to open in a Not so Crowded time
[Show spoiler](Like "X-MEN: FC", which picked a tough time to open as well)
, it'd probably be able to add $5-10M to the "projected" $30M wk-end GUESS-timate.

I know, but I feel like people just don't appreciate filmmaking like this anymore, you know? It's a trend over the last few years, and this seems to sort of solidify that. It's just a bummer. Remember, I'm an odd ball for my generation who loves movies from the 70's and 80's more than the 90's and 00's.

Lol - Oddball or not, what I said, is true. The marketplace in recent weeks is just too damn crowded it seems for 1 movie to open to Huge numbers (Hangover II aside, which is Still doing good business).

I'm sure it'll stay consistent, but how much so with what's opening over the next 3-5+ weeks, is hard to say.

This summer is too damn crowded....It's exciting, but bad at the same time. Next summer won't be nearly as hectic. Thank goodness for that...

Lol - looks like YOU were typing the exact Same thing as my post. But yeah, exciting so we can see good/fun movies since THOR started it (IMO, & get the BD's later this year/Black Friday week!), & wait for all the great movies still to come this year.

I was fully agreeing with what you were saying.

This summer has had, and still has to come, some great movies. But having them all slammed together in this summer is really hard to get a feel on how well movies are actually doing. If they had been more spaced out, there is a better chance some of this movies could have done better...But really, there is no way to know now. Things like X-Men, Kung Fu Panda and probably Green Lantern, will have to heavily rely on the home video sales to make a lot of it's money back...

Estimate for Super 8 revised upwards . A $23 million weekend for X-Men FC would be a 58% drop from the previous weekend and disappointing for the movie...hopefully, it will do better than that.

Quote:
FRIDAY 9:30 PM UPDATE: It's encouraging to see an original movie overperforming at the North American box office for $12 million Friday and what should be $35M from 3,379 locations. "Sweeeeeeet," a Paramount exec emailed me tonight. These grosses do not include the $1 million which the Bad Robot/Amblin/Paramount movie Super 8 from JJ Abrams and Steven Spielberg made from Thursday's sneaks in about 335 theaters. Everyone is very skeptical of the reputed $50 million cost but that's Paramount's claim and the studio is sticking to it. Refined numbers and full analysis later. Fox's week-old X-Men: First Class is a strong #2 making $7.5M Friday going to $23M for the weekend and a $97M cume. meanwhile, never underestimate the film taste of the public for sequels because #3 Warner Bros' The Hangover Part 2 has now grossed over $200m in its first 16 days of release. Today's gross of $6M gives HO2 a domestic cume of $204m and bragging rights for the largest grossing film of 2011. "With Green Lantern, Horrible Bosses, and Harry Potter 7B lined up and ready to go, WB is positioned to regain the industry market share (4th year in a row) by the end of summer," a Warner Bros exec just emailed me. Refined numbers and full analysis later.

As far as winning the yearly box office race for the studios (through the Summer), Warner will probably take it due to the number of movies it releases. Hangover II started very strong but it is fading a lot faster than the first one. Green Lantern and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 look huge (specially HP). Horrible Bosses could surprise.

Thus far, Paramount is in the lead with Transformers Dark Side of the Moon and Captain America:The First Avenger to go. Super 8 appears to be performing very well. It has been a bad year for Sony from all aspects, but I do think it has a good chance to come up big with either Bad Teacher or Zookeeper..maybe both. Sony is probably counting more on Smurfs 3D, but all along I have been smelling a bomb with that one.

Universal needed some hits in the worst way and got two awesome box office winners in Fast Five and Bridesmaids. However, Larry Crowne looks like a huge bore and can only hope in attracting the older crowds as it goes against Transformers DSOTM. Does anyone else think that Tom Hanks looks silly with an old face and jet black hair? Another Universal release Cowboys vs Aliens...frankly looks like a bust to me, even with all of the star power.

For Disney, it scored humongous $$$ with POTC 4 which is currently $813 million worldwide. Can Disney find success with Cars 2? Fox tried its hand with a reboot of X-Men minus Wolverine and did not find much success at the box office. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is coming for Fox, but it has little chance to make box office waves.

Studio weakling Lionsgate is afraid of the big boys in the Summer Season and has nothing to offer until Conan The Barbarian in August.

Biggest winners through the Summer:

Paramount, Warner Brothers, Disney, Universal, Fox, Sony, and Lionsgate.

Bad Teacher looks pretty funny, I'm kind of looking forward to that one. Lol, "Transformers: DARK of The Moon" maybe? (Pink Floyd playing at your house tonight? )

Cowboys & Aliens, as bizarre a concept as ever, actually looks good to me. Maybe "because" it's so different, but with the main players involved (& ILM doing the Effects), I'm thinking it'll be pretty big.

As for Tom Hanks, well...
[Show spoiler]Lol - come on now, you know Everyone in Hollywood drinks that special elixir that just takes the Grey right out of their hair!! That's one of MY big pet peeves, how nobody on TV or in most movies (aside from a few exceptions, yea) has Any Grey hair showing. They're all over 40, perfectly coifed Black or Brown or Blond hair, No Wrinkles it seems. Yea, it's all "Natural" of course.
