Does anyone think we'd have gotten that great BOGO deal of this past week had it not been Transformers/HD-DVD week?

It is a good thing. It it were not for Toshiba and HD-DVD, Blu-ray technology would not be being pushed to its limit. We wouldn't be seeing prices go down, great technological advancements and a lot more.

...so thank-you so very much Toshiba and HD-DVD companies, if it were not for you guys Blu-ray would not be as great as it is!!

Yep, and it works the other way as well, eg, HD-DVD coming out with a 50G disc since that's obviously been an advantage for BD, despite their claims to the contrary.

Competition is a great thing ...

Some say we need germs in order to strengthen our immune system. HD-DVD was a band-aid and is now a barrier to progress. As for sales, that is why we have laws against price-fixing.

The format war has led to better quality transfers, a rush to improve functionality and cheaper players/media.

So long as one format wins in a year or so and all the studios put material onto the winner, I don't care if the successor (BD

) becomes as big as DVD.
The only danger is that it turns into a niche format, though I don't think there's too much of a chance of that happening.

I see what you are saying. However, it wasn't the format war that drove down the price of DVD players and increased functionality/features in those players. It was manufacturers competing against each other under one unified format. The presence of HD-DVD prevents this because everyone else is waiting for a winner. Mass adoption in hardware will lead to a decrease in price for software.

Looks like someone has at least some knowledge of economics too. I wish more people understood this and did not attribute the format war for lowering prices. It seams many fail to understand that if it was not for the format war there would be a much larger market for HD content and greater competition among manufacturers to produce better players and drive prices lower.

They probably believe Toshiba is turning a profit from its players. One single cheap watered down 1080i player @ $200, HD-A2. Darn thing isn't even reliable at that price point.

Ditto that. I want my Paramount & Universal titles. Factionalization of the studios is the biggest thing keeping the war going and it's keeping an awful lot of people on the sidelines.

There are lots of titles made by the other studios that I want and can get before Universal and Paramount go to BD.
I can't help but think that the format war led to AVC and VC-1 encodes on BD50's with good transfers as opposed to MPEG-2 on BD25's with questionable transfers.
Seems people are quite impatient these days.

Amen to that. Without the format war, you will see studios and manufacturers competing for price and performance within the format, instead of against the other format.

Without the format war, there will be many more consumers which will drive the price down much faster.

A few BOGO sales far and between are not nearly enough to compensate for that.

I can see how it has helped progress...

but I doubt that it would be the end of great sales/prices when there's just one format to choose from, after all, there's still DVD. And this past weekend I was thrilled to see Blu-ray sales lower than their respective DVD prices in many cases. $10-$15 is a great range for Blu-rays and should still be somewhat profitable for the retailers, new releases being the exception of course.

There is plenty of competition now with SD DVD and different movie companies. There is also competition between companies that make DVD players and recorders.

But I see what you mean. If it wasn't for this wonderful format war, there wouldn't be so many movies and tv shows I CAN'T get on Blu.
