So either buy one or both or none.
It's a cash grab. At the very least they should've put the both cuts of LOTR together for blu.

Going to wait for the Extended Edition Box Set

If i buy the single disc releases, I will then have seen the movies and will wait forever to get a decent price on the EE set. This isnt gonna happen again like it did with LotR. I bought the theatrical releases, then the EE set came out, which I never saw BTW, and I just got that set 2 months ago. Oh.. and I still havent watched them...lol. NOT AGAIN!

So I am re-reading the Hobbit, I totally forgot that dogs walking on their hind legs and carrying trays with their front paws served the company food in Beorn's house. Helps make Radagast's hare-driven sled an easier swallow.

But everything with Beorn and his bear form, so cool. If there isn't a shot of him staring at the Lonely Mountains in the moonlight...Peter Jackson messed up hard.

Default Theatrical And Extended Cut!

I am a sucker for extra bonus material. And The ones that were released in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Theatrical Edition) were different from that in the Extended Edition. I am pretty sure they are gonna do the same thing again! So, I'll be buying BOTH!

This is what I assume:

The Theatrical Cut will include some featurettes released online, the production videos, Trailers and TV spots (which I just LOVE) and 2 things fans would wanna have a glimpse at : 1. An inside sneak peak at The Hobbit : The Desolation of Smaug and 2. A look at the Special Extended Edition of The Hobbit : An Unexpected Journey.

Later, the Extended Cut will include 20-25 minutes of new footage (PJ confirmed in an interview) and I am again hoping for around 6 hours of Bonus Material in the form of Appendices (spread over two discs), just like The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. It will focus on the same themes, Book to Script, Script to Screen, Making, Sound and Music, Digital Grading, Special Effects, and some new things like info on HFR.

I repeat, these are my assumptions.

Can't Wait!

*fingers crossed*

I suspect this Blu-ray will come too early to have a preview for Desolation of Smaug or even one for the AUJ: Extended Edition. We'll probably have to wait for SDCC for the latter, as was the case with the ROTK.

I will be waiting for the extended editions as well... I may red box the original cut though as I loved the film.

Ok I'm gonna guess that you've never watched any of the making of documentaries or followed these productions. These aren't your typical Extended Editions. Howard Shore scores music for ALL of the new scenes. How many Extended cuts get up to an hour of all new music? They go back and finish effects shots, and touch up effects. They also do not throw everything the have left over into their extended cuts. So, as, Phillipa has said they need to script out and decide what is necessary and not too much and to make sure they don't step in the toes of the other two films or reveal things too early. It is a full production. All of this is going on WHILE they are doing post production on the other films. This is an entirely different process from extended cuts that are completed after production is finished. They are still in production for two other massive films, and Jackson is a hands-on director who is in the editing room every day on those two films. So you have him editing those two films plus this extended cut and he just come off editing the theatrical cut of Part 1.

It isn't a cash grab. It takes time. The Extended Cut is not finished yet. Everyone who has followed production of these films knows this. So you can take the Theatrical now and the Extended in Oct/Nov or do without until Oct/Nov. Which would you rather do? I'll take the theatrical now and the Extended in Oct/Nov.

And the reason why LOTR cuts didn't get released together was because WB released the Theatrical Cuts without any input from Jackson. He has said this. It was a quick sloppy transfer purely for sales. Then with the EE they went back and did a proper transfer and new color grading while Jackson was dealing with Pre-production on the Hobbit. That takes time. And if you were following the Hobbit while it was in development hell you would know Jackson was dealing with Labor strikes, production possibly being forced to eastern europe, a director leaving which according to him required him to redesign much of the films, and various other issues including himself being hospitalized at one point.

I don't consider it a cash grab. Especially since they tell us ahead of time about it.

Also... the theatrical release versions are for the casual fans. Hence the fluffier extras.

Where as the extended cuts really are for the die hard fan. Just look at the LOTR releases.

Also the extended cuts always serve as a promo/tie-in for the next film in the series.

Since the cover art is TBA, I'm assuming it will get the same covert art as the French release.

Not bad, but it seems like they're heading towards part 2 with all of them looking toward the dwarfs home in the mountain. I would think the cover should have maybe some highlight of The Hobbit, possibly. Definitely cool though.
