I was thinking Borg as well. The events of First Contact have alerted the Borg in the past of the Federation earlier than before. Also, Guinan is 400 years old, already has Borg experience by this time frame, stationed on Earth in the 23rd Century, and can feel when the timeline has been disrupted. This all could be interested. Anyone else wanna see Whoopi come back?
I do love Tholians and Romulans as well. I'd pick Tholians out of the two. I know Nero wasn't government, but he was still Romulan. We had them two films in a row. Tholians, Borg, the Mirror Universe? There's a million angles they could go from here... |

[Show spoiler] I think anything could be good or bad in this universe. I love Star Trek '09 to death, but my stupidity already has me hating Into Darkness. Dunno, I'm sure I'll have a blast in what? Five days? Hooray! |

Assuming J.J. Abrams won't be back... which director is best suited to take over the franchise? I can think of only two.
If Paramount is letting Abrams stay on as producer, then Matt Reeves would have to be the favorite to take over the director's chair. Reeves is a childhood friend of Abrams, and they have experience collaborating together in television (Felicity) and in film (Cloverfield). Reeves is an underrated director whose most recent works (Cloverfield, Let Me In) have received critical acclaim. If he hits another home run with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, then he becomes the obvious choice to direct the next Star Trek, with Abrams serving as the producer. Star Trek could do for Matt Reeves what Mission Impossible IV did for Brad Bird. On the other hand, if Paramount is looking to replace J.J. Abrams as director and producer, then Bryan Singer is the obvious choice. He is a veteran of the genre, having guided the X-Men franchise as director/producer for the past 13 years. He is also a certified trekkie --- he had a cameo in Star Trek: Nemesis in 2002, and in fact he even proposed a Star Trek TV series to Paramount a few years ago. Plus he has made it abundantly clear he's interested in the job. |

Can't wait for this. Bring on the Klingons! Maybe Jason Momoa can play a Klingon leader. I also suspect we haven't seen the last of a certain character from Into Darkness.

According to Zachary Quinto they'll film Star Trek 3 next year:

I don't think it helped. The last time there was a 4 year gap between Trek entries was when Nemesis came out and that was the biggest bomb in the series(granted the movie sucking had a lot to do with that too). Plus they risk both the cast and the audience losing interest if they don't churn these out every couple years.

I can't wrap my mind around how this will actually happen. They even cancelled the Star Wars 3D re-releases because they wanted to focus all of their attention on Episode 7, and if I remember correctly they aren't going to start shooting until early next year. Regardless of who the director is for Trek (still not fully buying it will be Abrams), I think they would be smart to wait for 2016. 2015 is already going to be a ridiculous year for movies, and while Trek movies make money they don't destroy the box office like Marvel and Star Wars will. Might as well wait for 2016 after the chaos of the year before. |

I think it makes since they already have the main cast locked up for "Trek" and wouldn't take much if they have a script to start filming. To my knowledge they haven't even began casting Star Wars yet? There has been rumors that some of the original cast have said or "signed" that they would be in it but I don't think Disney has released anything officially.
Now if they do start filming next year that doesn't necessarily mean it will get released in 2015 as it doesn't say what month it would begin shooting. It would likely take several months to complete once they start filming then you throw in another 2 or 3 months or more of CGI/special effects work, scoring & other post production work. So its possible it might get a late 2015 release or more than likely they wait until May/June 2016. |
