The Amityville 3-D review suggests poor quality native-3D.

Yeah that's a shame. Was hoping for a better score than 2. But to be honest, I only wanted the 3D version and not the box set. And since the 3D is rated lower than average, I will pass on this one. Save more $$ and there are still quite a few 3D releases to pickup on 10/1.

There are plenty of ole school 3D movies with tons of depth. That's one reason everybody is so excited when they come out on BD. Are you referring to Brendan Frasers Journey To The Center of the Earth?

Yes. Apparently "old school" is 2008.

As I recall, most 80's 3D WAS pretty fuzzy in the theaters, with or without the 3D. I'd just thought most of that was unsynchronized projection, but could've been just the cameras they had to film it with at the time.
Usually, when I watch a former 80's-3D movie on 2D, I can tell it was in 3D from the soft, murky look to the PQ. So the review may have just been finding out the truth the hard way. Until we get Jaws 3-D or F13 for comparison, we'll never know.

I always planning on waiting on this one but I won't put too much into that review. Remember this site gave Resident Evil: Afterlife a 2.5 in 3D. I'll wait to hear what the other forum members have to say on this one.

That is a good point. Maybe I will do the same. Thanks.

Thanks. Good description of experiencing the movie in 3D.

Blu-ray 3D with a sometimes great and enjoyable MVC-encoded transfer, showing excellent dimensionality in nearly every scene. However, there is both a good and bad to the presentation, largely thanks to the limitations of the technology and the photography of the time. Parallax is to the extreme, giving the image a gracious amount of depth but it also strains the eyes, shows a good deal of crosstalk and exposes ringing around the edges of many objects. The background penetrates deep into the screen, creating an exaggerated sense of space and distance. Overall, the picture has that sort of pop-up book effect that's less-appealing, more comical and flat than convincing. The most fun to be had are the various laughable gimmick shots where objects protrude from the screen and make viewers flinch.

This site's review of Amityville 3-D is atrocious. The reviewer has no clue what 3-D films in the early-mid 80s looked like -- the issues he describes are artifacts of the Arrivision process.

He also seems to think Damiani directed it. It's actually Richard Fleischer -- and the review still hasn't been corrected.

Par for the course, regrettably, with some of the recent "reviews" the site has run recently.

(Whew, my memory was right, they DID all look like that. )

The 3D is AWESOME!! This is what I remember about loving 3D in the 80s and what kept me loving it still today! It's not the kind of 3D we have been getting the past few years, it's gimmick and it's very in your face!

Wow, after the horrid review here I was very worried but I am absolutely thrilled with this release. Mind you on my Active there's some ghosting, but on the passive set it's just incredible. Scream Factory rocks.

Hmmm...there's one thumbs up from a fellow member. Still deciding what to do regarding this release. Oz, Wax, Croods, and Mermaid is already taking a lot of my $$. We'll see.

I'll wait till you can buy this outside of the box set. I'm sure the Blu-ray 3D disc only will be available on eBay in month or so.

Default Awesome 3D!!!!

If you are on the fence about this (as far as the 3D goes), hop of the fence and buy it. The 3D is amazing. This is the way 3D movies should be presented. It is layered well with plenty of depth. The pop outs, man the pop outs are in your face!!!! Any director about to film a 3D movie should watch this as reference material. The movie itself is kind of meh, but the 3D makes up for it. If you are a fan of old school 3D, you will love this title.

completely agree. Journey to the Center of the Earth is far from vintage or classic. It's a current generation film. Most old 3D films have an excellent amount of depth - far better than many of today's films.
