hey what is the number of HDDVD players out their currently? is it like 250k or something?

So, if they sell through the 50k at these low sub 200 maybe even sub 100 dollar prices in say....2 weeks (if they are lucky) then that still means a 20% increase in the number of HDDVD players out there.

Its not great for HDDVD but it also isn't bad:/

IMO, its HD DVDs final attack.... but it's pretty strong.

With this they put themselves back in the game or hopefully, they die trying.

LOL and 2 million makes any sense..since toshiba's goal was 1.5mil this year and then dropped it to 1mil....

Plus there is only 250k hd dvd players out there right now. SO 2mill is a luaghable count....and if it really was 2million don't you think best buy would stil be selling them instead of selling out of them?

did you know Dreamcasts can play VCDs?

great little machine, great software lineup. Couldn't get people to buy it, instead they waited for the PS2.

Right on Bill Hunt, you are the man! If only everyone read thedigitalbits... then we wouldn't have to explain to the HDM ignorant why Blu-ray is superior in every aspect.

Please everyone resist buying this shitty player.
I disagree with your assessment.

If blu supporters pick this up, I think it safe to say that they will NEVER use it to play WB disks, only Universal (if its WB, they will just buy the blu version) How much more poetic justice is it for the devices to be picked up by blu supporters where toshiba has to subsidize the cost of the player AND the 7 movies?

If you NEVER get another HD-DVD, you can in effect spend the same amount as you would for 5 moves, get the player, and 7 movies (all red exclusive), NEVER spend another dime on their product, and STILL come out ahead.

The best part is because there is a limited amount of these, every one bought by a blu supporter is one less that can turn an undecided household red-exclusive. Don't kid yourself, if we don't pick these up, SOMEONE WILL! How sweet is this, that we have the ability to use Toshiba's OWN MONEY to get 7 exclusive titles, while limiting their ability to grow their market.

I'd agree with Bill Hunt provided that:

(1) there are only a limited number of A2s (in the tens of thousands, not millions)

and

(2) The A3s are non-profitable at the $199 price point.

If Toshiba can make a profit on the A3s at $199 indefinitely, HD DVD has a good chance at literally overwhelming Blu-ray with numbers.

The key question is are the HD DVD players really that cheaper to manufacture than the Blu-ray players ?

Bill Hunt proves to be the man once again. I see this whole cheap ass hd dvd player as a good sign of the war ending very soon. Thanks toshiba for ending this sooner for us by making such rash decisions and undercutting everyone casue now all HD hardware companies are gonna be pissed and wont make players for there shiatty format

I know it sounds tempting to buy a A2 but after the new year those that did will soon realize that $99 was a big waist of money. If your BLU PHUCKING SHOW IT and if you turned purple so be it just dont waist my time posting your stupidity on here u can go to AVS for that

It was dying before it hack came out to play games on copied discs... Sega was debt and just slowly dying after the Genesis and all the failed successors bombed (32x, Saturn, etc...) so they tried to refocus just as software developers...

This was actually sugested by someone in my office.

I was thinking of picking up a player for the bedroom the weekend, however this thing will not play a good portion of my collection.

50k, even 100k isn't the masses.

PS3 sold in the millions is masses, Disney is the masses, primetime TV ad's throughout the holiday season is the masses.

These players will sell, but to who ?

They'll be price sensitive consumers, who'll buy DVD's, not $30 HD-DVD's, or HD-DVD owners buying a second player.

Net result little impact on movie sales.

The damage?

A cheap and nasty image for a next gen HD format.

No further CE support to back up Toshiba.

Stepping on the toes of the Microsoft HD-DVD add-on.

No wriggle room once you hit rock bottom, what are HD-DVD's future selling points?
