Does the Gaumont transfer look soft? Absolutely not! The over sharpened Sony transfer fools people during a screencap comparison. The Sony transfer looks like a video. One of those overly processed old HD transfers, full of EE in every shot, digital sharpening, etc. Once you see it, you cannot pay attention to the movie. The color timing of the Gaumont release is dead accurate to my theater experience. Sure, the whites are clipped a little, but it's miles better than the archaic Sony mess. |

The Gaumont transfer actually has a little bit more REAL detail. Unfortunately, you're just being fooled by Sony's EE and sharpening.

That's pretty aggressive DNR which is worse then the EE/sharpening on the U.S remastered disc. and here's a picture showing just how overblown the contrast is on the Gaumont version as well - http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergl...ess=#vergleich The U.S remastered version does seem to be the lesser of the 2 evils IMO.. |

The U.S. version is not more detailed...unless of course halos designate "more detail" to you, in which case yes, it is more detailed.

For good measure here they are again: http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergl...ess=#vergleich http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergl...ess=#vergleich Yes the U.S version is overly sharpened and above all has separate problems of its own, but its clear which is more detailed. I agree that watching something in motion is always the ultimate deciding factor, but screencaps generally give a good idea on whats ahead and what I see is blown contrast and a lot of DNR.

So I take it that you like movies looking 'squeaky clean' at the expense of fine detail then eh?
Watching it in motion could give fractionally better or fractionally worse results then the screencaps display, but either way you can't undo DNR of which the Gaumont is loaded with. You'd be delusional or ignorant to think it doesn't feature a hell of a lot of noise reduction (which I feel is a worse offender then digital sharpening.) When I actually watched the Gaumont (rather than some screen caps) what struck me was how the boosted look really suited the film. I doubt it would suit most films - but this film it certainly did. Its not supposed to be realistic! ![]() |

Ok, so do they both have the same transfer? If so, which one has the best audio? Or maybe I should hold off & get the UK steel book coming out in November?

Same transfer and the audio is as previously stated. The UK is the best disc to get if you have a region free player.
