Odd assumption to make. While I thought the film was very well done, I think most of the horror will be worn out after another viewing. I much prefer the classics like The Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby, where the film can hold its own beyond the scares.

Interestingly, I liked it because it could hold its own beyond the scares. I wasn't able to feel a sense of dread or fright while watching it (mostly because of obnoxious teenagers in front of me kept talking and ruining the mood), but I still enjoyed the movie for its story, and especially its characters.

The story is definitely above the sea of mediocre horror films that are plopped out these days, and I enjoyed it once, but I didn't find anything spectacular enough going on for me to have that burning desire to see it again. Who knows, that could change at some point.

Fair enough, my feelings were the same for Jack the Giant Slayer earlier this year, in that I didn't find anything particularly spectacular about it. I did watch it again in hope that my feelings would change, and while I did appreciate its strengths a lot more the second time, my feelings were basically the same, but I digress.

I wasn't so sure James Wan could top himself after Insidious, but he impressed me with this one. Even with some high expectations, I was more than satisfied.

At one point early into the film, I remember questioning myself for seeing it in theaters. Not because I thought it was bad in the least. On the contrary, I was afraid it was going to be too scary for theaters. I guess I get pretty spooked by ghost stories. So glad I saw it in theaters, though.

It's a more ambitious film than Insidious. It touches on religion and reveals the power of love and family in such a dark and perilous situation. The film could have continued on for an extra 20 minutes at the end if they had wanted to really knock us out with more creepiness involving their collection of cursed objects. But maybe it's a good thing they left us wanting more.

It's a great horror film that transcends the genre. Those are rare these days. Highly, highly recommended.

B+ (at least)

Didn't scare me, but I thought it was a well crafted movie. Won't get the BLU, but I think James Wan did a good job.

General consensus seems to be this is a scary ace movie. I'll need to check this out this weekend with the lady! Here's the only negative review I've really read of this film. It's from Ebert's website and the reviewer gave it one star. As far as a quick time table from theater to Blu format, I have no issues.

Seemed like another version of 'The Amityville Horror' to me, with a dash of 'Poltergeist' tossed in, rounding off with a pinch of 'The Exorcist.'

Sounds like a good combo, but there really wasn't anything new or original in this. But I will give it points for the spookiest doll in movie history. That doll made 'Chucky' look like kids stuff.

So I take it Annabelle is in the movie?

Annabelle is real and is in the Warrens' Occult Museum, behind glass of course:

It's not the Raggedy Ann doll, but Annabelle is in it.

Wow, I would draw the line on that one, lol. I'd settle for a steelbook, though!

But if there isn't anything new or original, why the rave reviews across the board? Especially from film critics who usually pan horror films?

It was made with such competent mastery of craft and skill and with complete control of how the horror genre works best, IMO, and many critics felt likewise. It also helped that it was very well-acted.

Will this movie stand the test of time?

Meaning, will it go down as a great classic?

Is it too busy... doing too much to always try to scare?

The reason I ask is, have you ever noticed, the greats always have more of a slow-burn to 'em. The Shining... The Exorcist...etc. By first watch, people say, "They're slow". But upon repeat viewings, one realizes their awesomeness

I think you answered your question with that last part.

But I really didn't answer it because I haven't yet seen The Conjuring. Perhaps next week.
I really don't know if its got that "slow burn" or if it's crazy busy with the scares...
