I can see Warner giving us lossless audio but no remaster but I hope I'm wrong.

Repackagings with lossless audio seems to be the only upgrade studios are interested in these days.
Agreed.

And when the new format (4K Blu) comes out, I don't expect many catalogs other than those with existing 4K masters which will be deemed as "big sellers" (mostly classics, etc.)...It's going to be largely newer titles.

But 4K finishes for "newer" titles are also few and far between unless you're Sony (who are getting more apathetic to physical media by the day), so just where will the titles come from if not the back catalogue?

Even if they have a 4K scan of Goodfellas, it's still not certain that they will release it. Remember A Clockwork Orange.

Hell, it's even possible that much like the 40th anniversary edition of A Clockwork Orange, they will include 4K clips of Goodfellas in this newly announced bonus featurette/s, but still have the ancient transfer for the main feature to troll us extra hard.

I'm picturing this edition to be packaged similarly to the recent Blazing Saddles release from last year.

That most certainly is an issue. Is there any word in the industry about finishing more new films in 4K? I doubt there will be a ton of titles on the format regardless, but I'd like to be wrong.

I'd love a new master, but like so many, I have my doubts considering the amount of repackages the industry does all the time. With regard to 4K discs, that's going to be another 3D flop. Physical media is a dying breed. The compact disc should tell you that. Considering the emphasis these days on everything being a "service" or in the "cloud" from programs like Adobe Photoshop to streaming like Netflix, it's very apparent that even the collector may soon become a dying bread as well. Why get you to collect, when you'll have to rent a movie every time you want to see it like back in the days of VHS rental stores.

And what will happen when their grand illusions of streaming and cloud use fail due to the lack of network capability to support it ?

And how about the huge population of people who still live outside of broadband's reach ? I live just outside a very large city, which also happens to be home to TWC. Yet you go less than a mile down my road and there is no service available except for satellite, which is a joke.

If 4K Blu is a flop and dies real fast, it's sad because current 4K streaming is about equivalent to a well mastered Blu-ray and this is unlikely to change for a number of reasons. My hope is there are actually enough videophiles in existance to support 4K Blu as a long time niche (like what happened with laserdisc). However, I do agree with you that some factions of the industry have never been "comfortable" with you buying and permanently owning a movie. They want you pay each time to watch it at home or anywhere else.

It's more Warner than "the industry".

True, Warner is the king, but the industry as a whole does this from the days of VHS and up. Marketing people are some of the lowest around. I used to be in a technical support position that worked with them frequently.

Since new featurettes are with Scorsese are confirmed and there's "a Letter from Martin Scorsese" in the digi/book/let, I'm a little more optimistic since Scorsese seems to be directly involved with the release.

If they still re-release the old poor transfer, it goes without saying that many will be angry with Warner. But I will also be angry at Scorsese himself, who continuously endorses the blu ray format, if he himself didn't step in and disallow Warner from releasing the 2006 HDDVD transfer again, which doesn't come close to showcasing blu ray's full potential. Spielberg stood up to Universal and demanded that they should release his movies with proper picture quality worthy of the blu ray format or not release them at all, Scorsese should do the same!

I sent a message/complaint to Warner, asking them if this release will be a remaster, I hope more people do the same:

Good idea, I send Warner a message too. It would be cool if more people do the same.

But im for a petition for a new transfer and people in forums around the world can sign this. Maybe it works. But all is better then do nothing.

Its time for a remaster, why not for Goodfellas?

Vinyl's just had its best sales for 18 years in the UK, point being that people do still want physical media especially when there's a perceived increase in quality and more of a sense of ownership, like with the lovely gatefold covers and exclusive remixes and whatnot. Or perhaps we just have more hipster douchebags over here, I dunno.

No double dip for me, unless it has a new transfer.

Like everyone else has said, would re-buy for a remaster, but not otherwise. After Warner's recent "diamond luxe" editions I really doubt this will be a remaster.

I'd love to say 'no remaster, no sale' but who am I kidding.

The photobook alone pretty much guarantees this is only a question of when (ie how long will it take to reach a 'meh, what the hell' pricepoint even if it's basically the same disc).

I don't mind double dipping one bit, but I definitely won't buy it if it's the same disc. If it has lossless audio and the new featurette/s all on the same disc but with the same faulty transfer, I will think about it... depending on how big of a difference there is in the audio according to the reviews and how good the new featurettes are. But a new video transfer would be a much higher priority than audio/extras.
