"The further the spiritual evolution of mankind advances, the more certain it seems to me that the path to genuine religiosity does not lie through the fear of life, and the fear of death, and blind faith, but through striving after rational knowledge."
- Albert Einstein

I'am not a religous person. Religion & gods are for the dead & I'am not there yet. Religion, in general, is the most damaging, dangerous invention men has ever made.

I am getting this one, like to know how they kill off a god.

heres an aritcle on it. this lady who wrote this article did an interview with the author confirming all this... its all very interesting.

Yeah, this thread will be closed soon, but before it does.

I have read all the books. The first book is tame. The concepts of bringing down the Kingodom of Heaven and establishing a Republic of Heaven (one ruled by the people, rather than a supreme being), killing God, the role of Dust and all that isn't brought up until the second book.

The final book culminates w/ an attack on the Kingdom of God, where he is eventually killed and the Kingdom of God falls and it is up to, essentially the next generation to build a new Heaven, this one dictated by the people.

The movie is supposed to deal w/ a war with the Magesterium rather than the Kingdom of God. The Magesterium will protrayed as an oppressive church gone wrong - rather than the all out war portrayed in the books.

Just wanted to squeeze one in before the mods close this thread.

Wow excellent article. Once again the church got it wrong. This is kind of laughable because they really got it wrong. I just find it interesting that an Atheist would portray God is this light at all. This is also another example of how a person can be smart but on the whole people are stupid.

What all of you that are taking this point of view don't get, is that what we have here is an author, namely Pullman, who calls the Christian God, the Devil, and calls the Christian Devil, God. The article from the Boston Globe is predictable, liberal rubbish. That writer's interpretation of Pullman's works means NOTHING in comparison to Pullman's. For that writer to try to say Pullman is saying the opposite of what he is really saying is pure Orwellian double-speak.

Question for you...Have you read these books yourself? If not then I can't really see how your opinion is any more valid than you saying the reporters article is rubbish. Do you have a link to what Pullman was actually saying when he wrote his books? This is almost getting as bad as the "Harry Potter is the Devil" camp.

The funny part is all this thread has done is make me want to buy the other two books, read them for myself and come to my own conclusions. Go go conspiracy theories!!!

Based on the previews it looks like a lot of eye candy. I did notice that the story itself appears to be different in and of itself, which actually made me want to read the books. Friday will be the day I get to see it, as is the case with most of us. I just hope it's as good as the book.

compared to most movies based off of books this is like a miracle. eragon, a series of unfortunate events, narnia (was ok but lacked the magic the books had) and so many others that have tried and failed.

this movie actually feels like the book. and is the first movie based on a book where i feel the casting compared to the book couldnt get any better. i'm very happy with this film. i don't understand how anyone couldn't like it.

Wow that's good news. There have definitely been a lot of book to movie translations that have bombed or been a let down. Both my wife and myself feel that way about the Harry Potter films after the first two. We loved how Chris Clombus captured the magic of the books that the others were simply lacking, but to each their own. Golden Compass seems to capture that surreal and gritty feel of the book and some of the lines in the previews are right out of the book. I love that they got Sam Elliott to play Lee Scoresby, and Ian McKellen voicing Iorek...those two just fit their role like a glove. It's kinda funny how they bummy down the titles for American viewers and readers. I don't recall the Alethiometer ever called the Golden Compass in the book. I like the title "The Northern Light" a lot better.

it's called an alethiometer throughout the whole movie. they just switched it in the previews as not to confuse people. an the northern lights aren't even in the movie so that's kind of sad but other than that i was very impressed.
