Default At Best Buy Today...selling sony Blu-ray player well!

I think the $299 number is magic for the Sony entry level Blu-Ray player!

A couple of days ago they had a stack of 11.....now only 3 left (they also sold a couple of Sharp as well). This going on in Gainesville, FL....how many best buy stores are there in the country times the number of players sold this week

Hope this trend continues.

FYI....just picked up another BOGO at Best Buy.....The Condemned and Crank (both had great PQ and SQ ratings)!

Go Blu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My friend is a sales dept manager at BB. He said that while they are selling tons of the Sony BDP-S300, a LOT of them are coming back. He said people are buying some new movies and they won't play. He tells them during the sale that before doing anything they must update the firmware on the player but when they get home, the users either:

1. don't know how to do that
2. can't be bothered

They do not understand why Blu-Ray is not like regular DVD, pop in a disc and press play. When he tells them that it is an evolving standard, they get all pissed that it is not ready for prime time and return the unit. On the movies that do work, they are further angered at how long it takes to start a movie. They cannot wait three minutes for a movie to start. This will completely turn off joe sixpack and will damage Blu-Ray's viability as a playback device in the future.

well the average consumer does not know enough about blu ray to know this about firmware. we live in an instant society, so they want it now, not 1 mintute from now. its too bad that this is happening, it may very well hurt BD sales for sure.

I think Sony and the other CE companies should start packaging the lastest firmware discs in with the players. I think people wouldnt mind just popping in the disc and updating the firmware that way. Well that just a thought, but i think it would help.

They should ship firmware discs to retailers, then they could give them at point of sale.

that should be an easy thing to do you think, but it doesnt happen

I already asked the 'insiders' about having some little brochure packed within the PS3 box, just to explain of what you need and how bluray works....no one took the time to answer this question

there is more work that has to be done..

It really makes me wonder why anyone ever buys anything besides a PS3. Do any PS3 owners experience these kinds of delays? Never waited more than 1 minute for any movie.

This is why I love my PS3. It loads super fast, I can play great games on it, download the newest firmware(1.1 is nice, can't wait to try it out). I've had no problems at all playing my Blu Ray's on it, and it is a 60 gig that came with Talladega Nights.

Within the last few months no fewer than 5 of the people i work with bought PS3s, and the Blu Ray capability was a big part of their decision to get the PS3.

I even convinced one guy not the get the A2 during their $98 firesale and to instead spend the extra and get a true 1080p player with larger studio support.

I agree. That is why I went for the PS3, loads up right away! I could have gone with a stand alone for my second unit, but instead got another PS3 so I have two and don't regret it at all.

I do think that the average consumer though does think of the unit as a gaming unit and not a movie unit, even with the free movies. Kind of hard for some people to connect the dots.

Until you mentioned it, I use to think that my 40GB BD loaded right up. Of course it had to go through it's normal "boot up" or as I call it "get right" phase..... to me it's only a matter of seconds not minutes.

Sony simply has to start shipping them with the latest firmware and be more diligent in getting discs out to customers. When new firmware hits the web, it should also hit the production line. No ifs ands or buts. Unless they start doing it via celestrial trasmission.

Just to add too what I said, places like BB could have a free of charge FW update by Geek squad or something you no? & then teach the consumer about the need for FW updates. I dont think HDM will catch on 'mainstream' until there are HD & BD players right out of the box that play all the movies that are out & will be out PERIOD!
