Interesting. I knew Marvel had to sign off on Fox doing any X-Men related television shows, but I didn't know they were going to actually be involved with producing it as a partner.

Wow, didn't expect that. Hopefully we hear a "partnership" with FF4 next!

Why continue paying big money for an aging A-list star and an actress who clearly doesn't want to be in the movie?

Maybe focusing on the new cast (who don't demand big paychecks btw) could pay off if they worked on creating a solid story that didn't depend on plastering JLaw's face all over the ****ing marketing, a completely useless subplot just to shoehorn in a cameo and instead of creating generic, world ending CGI shitfests they could sell a tighter, small scale, more relatable story (i.e. X1 and 2).
You realize that the reason that actors demand big checks is because there is a good chance that they will put butts in the seats, right? Now, obviously that doesn't always work. But the chances are that some people who aren't even fans of the franchise/movie but are fans of that particular star will go only to see him/her. It's seriously tough to sell a film, let alone a franchise, without stars that people really want to see. It can be done, sure. But not when you're talking about a production budget just south of $200M and lord knows what for marketing.

Sometimes, like with Star Wars or Jurassic Park, the franchise can sell itself. But I don't think X-Men is like that. In the case of SW or JP it had been a LONG time since a new film had come out. X-Men movies, otoh, are all over the place. There's no nostalgia factor, no, "Oh man, I LOVED this as a kid!" factor.

Now, I have no idea about Apocalypse since I haven't seen it. But FC and DoFP definitely worked well and were critical, popular, and box office successes. Well, FC I'm not so sure about. But DoFP definitely was a box office success.

I mean, I see all these people complaining that Jubilee wasn't used enough/correctly. Well, guess what? Lana Condor isn't going to sell your movie. Fair or not, that's reality.

X-Men Director Bryan Singer Really Wants a Solo Mystique Movie For Jennifer Lawrence

Quote:
here’s been a lot of speculation lately around whether Jennifer Lawrence will continue to play Mystique (a.k.a. Raven), the shape-shifting, side-switching mutant in the X-Men franchise. The series’s latest installment, Apocalypse, hit theaters over Memorial Day weekend—showing audiences just how hard 20th Century Fox is working to keep the Oscar winner on board. A recent interview with director Bryan Singer also confirms that if 20th Century Fox had its way, Lawrence would be the face of the franchise going forward.

Speaking with the Empire podcast, Singer said, “People have asked if I’d do a stand-alone [movie about Mystique]. I think she’s right. . . . She has that view of the world.” Singer’s words echo those of X-Men screenwriter Simon Kinberg, who, while doing press for 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, told Entertainment Weekly, “I love what Jen Lawrence has done with Mystique, and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there’s so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo.”

Lawrence herself has seemed a little less enthusiastic about this prospect. Most critics noted that her performance as Raven in X-Men: Apocalypse lacked the spark she brings to most of her roles, even though it’s clear that Apocalypse was, to a certain degree, shaped around her.

Kinberg recently confessed that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine plays a significantly smaller role in Apocalypse than he was originally supposed to, all in favor of promoting Mystique. As Kinberg explained, “There was always a notion that we wanted Wolverine to be in the movie. We wanted to find a way to feature him in the film, partly because Bryan [Singer] and I love Hugh [Jackman] so much. . . . There was a version when he was going to come in at the midpoint of the film and be like the drill sergeant for the kids and take over as their leader. And we felt like that stepped on [Jennifer Lawrence’s] role in the movie and becoming their leader.” Jackman himself—who was once the clear linchpin of the franchise—will be hanging up his Adamantium claws after one more solo Wolverine movie. And it’s Mystique (traditionally a villain!) rallying the young mutants at the end of the film—once again calling back to Lawrence’s star-making work in the Hunger Games franchise.

Mystique also spends most of the film in “Raven” mode while wearing a suspiciously Mockingjay-esque braid and black flight suit. Though the movie does have a plot-based explanation for that choice, the lack of blue makeup may be related to Lawrence’s professed preference. “I love working with Bryan, and I love these movies. It’s just the paint,” she told Entertainment Weekly in 2015, speaking about her reluctance to continue with the franchise. When Lawrence was 20, she said, she didn’t mind “fumes and toxins. Now I’m almost 25, and I’m like, ‘I can’t even pronounce this and that’s going in my nose? I’m breathing that?’”

There are other odd narrative moments from Apocalypse—specifically, one in the final act involving Quicksilver and Magneto—that could be explained away by Kinberg and Singer wanting to keep the focus on Mystique. But even without speculation, it’s clear that X-Men: Apocalypse is a movie that’s meant to highlight Lawrence as the potential, new leader of the franchise. Whether that’s something she wants remains to be seen.

Well, he is the Godfather of the X-Men series.

The next X-Men movie should guarantee their traditional costumes - it would be amazing if they could get the directors of either First Class or Deadpool to do the next film.

I think some people forget that Deadpool is actually insane. You can getaway with having a parody within the X-Men continuity, because all the fourth wall breaking is all on Deadpool's head. Noticed how Deadpool doesn't start breaking the fourth wall until after he was experimented on. At the point, that's when Deadpool starts to lose his mind. So underneath all that humor, Deadpool is actually a pretty dark character when you think about it.

Nah. she'll be fine. No more confusing than Mystique, Nightcrawler, and Beast all being blue. X-23 is a young feisty female Wolverine with only two blades that come out of each hand like Wolverine's do -- not pointy nails that protrude from each of her fingers like Deathstrike's.

What would be interesting is if they wind up giving her a costume similar to Wolverine's in the comic, especially since he's never gotten to wear it the movies.

I agree. He'd sound like a schizophrenic talking a lot, mostly to himself.
