Some really good news on this release. "Restored mono" tracks to go along with 7.1-- 3 new commentaries, 11 episodes have isolated scores and a total of 10+ hours of bonus material (that last part according to Trekmovie.com)
Subtracting the three hours of new commentaries that leaves 7 hours of documentaries spread out into 6 segments (2 docs per disc) If those numbers are correct awesome amount of bonus material. Link to Trekcore with complete updated specs.... http://trekcore.com/blog/2016/09/the...s-december-13/ |

Actually without the branching much more room for PQ. The Star Trek "Origins" release from 2013-- with 5 episodes only had the remastered versions and the picture was noticeably better. That release also seemed to have less DNR and MPEG instead of VC-1. If that has any effect on PQ. |

Definitely in for this, looks like a cracking little set of goodies. Hopefully they'll be the original VFX with no branching, and the fresh AVC encode could indeed bring some of its own benefits.

I find it hilarious how this is being promoted and that Roddenberry even had copies of these because it is a well known fact that the reason we haven't seen these before is because Roddenberry stole and sold the trims back in the 60's. All those film cells that he sold and that sell at conventions (I have a few myself) are the Desilu/CBS version of these that Roddenberry took from their editing room and then sold. Now it is the "Roddenberry Vaults" version because he has the only copies - CBS should look a little more into this vault, god only knows what else they might find in there that they thought was lost!
![]() Having said all that, I hope they don't overcharge on this as I do want to see these. |

Here is the difference between the original release and the "Origins" release that had a different codec and a lot less DNR...

Yeah, the isolated score tracks hold a lot of appeal for me, as well. So far they haven't been talked about much, but that's a huge selling point for music fanatics. Here's hoping the documentaries and trims are compelling. |

Sounds pretty cool. Though, it's really a shame that of all the episodes, "City" doesn't get an isolated score because Fred Steiner did write original music for the episode -- it's not all stock cues from prior episodes. It was also recorded in stereo, which was rare at the time. If it's at all related to them losing rights to that "Goodnight Sweetheart" song again, it's pretty lame they couldn't just leave the isolated score silent there, since it's not score anyway, it's source music. But who knows what their reasons were exactly. Oh well.

I don't believe a disc containing all these trims would sell at all. It would also be incredibly tedious to watch.
The only sensible way to present these fragments is alongside their episodes. So there were two options: delete the current TOS BluRay season sets and redo them with these "extra extras" added, OR, do what they've decided to do. Imagine the outcry if they'd redone the season sets. People who spent a couple hundred dollars on them when they first came out would probably suggest they should get the new improved season sets for free. And they'd certainly have refused to spend another hundred bucks. But putting out a $20 set like this (with some of the best episodes) is affordable, not to mention easier than remaking all the season sets. |

There is no way the isolated scores are counting towards the 10 hours of bonus features.
The 3 commentaries and 11 isolated scores come to over 11.5 hours -- leaving zero for the 6 documentaries. Time will tell if the 10 hours is accurate, but isolated scores don't count toward that total. And "$20 set"--? No way this set is under $35 on release day. |
