Default Star Trek TOS: The Roddenberry Vault (2016)

Star Trek: The Original Series - The Roddenberry Vault Blu-ray

Press release:

Quote:
During the production of Star Trek: The Original Series, bits and pieces of episodic footage were left on the cutting room floor, then stored away in film cans for decades by the Gene Roddenberry Estate.

Now, in celebration of the show’s 50th Anniversary, The Roddenberry Vault has finally been opened. Along with 12 of their favorite episodes, fans can see and own behind the scenes footage from the making of the series as well as alternate takes, deleted scenes, omitted dialogue, outtakes, and original visual FX elements.

STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES – THE RODDENBERRY VAULT Blu-ray set includes newly-produced special feature documentaries that incorporate the “Vault” materials and feature all-new interviews with cast and production personnel, including new insights from William Shatner (Captain James T. Kirk), writers Dorothy “D.C.” Fontana, David Gerrold, & John D.F. Black, director Ralph Senensky, casting director Joseph D’Agosta, visual effects artist Richard Edlund, and more.

Also featured is an exploration into the series’ long-lasting appeal through interviews with some of Star Trek’s biggest fans including The Big Bang Theory co-creator Bill Prady, The Simpsons writer/producer David Mirkin, Family Guy writer/producer David A. Goodman, NASA’s Bobak Ferdowsi, Bill Nye (The Science Guy), and many more.

The special feature documentaries are:
  • Inside The Roddenberry Vault – A multi-part glimpse at classic episodes from new angles and perspectives.
  • Star Trek: Revisiting A Classic – A look at life on the set during production.
  • Strange New Worlds: Visualizing The Fantastic – An inside look at the groundbreaking work of the series’ designers and visual effects artists.

STAR TREK: THE RODDENBERRY VAULT includes 12 classic Star Trek episodes in high-definition Blu-ray chosen for their relevance to the Vault’s lost/unseen material.

No news for 4K Remasters for the rest of the TOS and TNG films? With seamless branching for The Motion Picture and The Undiscovered Country with the remaining DVD bonus features? Hopefully not with the amateurish Mondo artwork.
So I'm guessing $56.99 MSRP for two discs since CBS/Paramount loves to price gouge STAR TREK fans.

If they actually put out new 4K remasters I wouldn't care what they were packaged in but sadly they are unlikely to see the light of day, after all most people want to pay next to nothing for releases and considering you can get a 1-10 set for $30 there won't be much profit in it for them and they are all about profit.

If Paramount puts some at affordable prices, they should see how much they sell in numbers. Also seeing how many have done the replacement for STAR TREK II: The Wrath of Khan - Director's Cut Blu.
I'm not even sure if I'm even interested in this release or not. Want to see which 12 episodes this covers and if they'll be encoded differently compared to their TOS Season sets.

Sounds like a nice set for fans, though it would be better in the huge collection they're re-releasing.. If the price is decent, I'll probably still pick it up.

I'll probably get this, even though I am MUCH more a fan of the TNG era than the TOS stuff. Still, it seems like something every Trek fan needs, and I am certainly that.

Same here, it sounds like a treasure trove of goodies. THIS is the sort of Trek re-release that I can get behind, instead of them repackaging the same shitty Blu-rays of the movies over and over and over.

Wow...this release sounds like the freaking goods. As someone who adores the TOS era, this is looking like a total day-one buy for me.

I will definitely pick this up for the unseen material.

Now the question is, Will the included episodes be the original broadcast versions or the 2006 Remastered edits? Given the nature of this set, I would assume the original versions would be included.

I really would have love to have seen behind the scenes footage of "The Cage" tho.

Would be surprised if they were not branching versions as on the season sets.

And hopefully they'll include the many hilarious bloopers that exist.

While I understand the economics, I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be just as happy to plunk down my money for the behind the scenes footage and unseen material by itself, without having to buy episodes I already own.

I'd actually prefer to just rebuy the whole series, complete with the new footage/extras. Rather unfortunate the 50th Anniversary didn't already include this, really.

These are basically new extras. Very interesting new extras, but something that in the old days would have certainly been included in subsequent re-issues or anniversary editions. Now, it's being milked for all it's worth.

Still, for people that own the 1st release that wouldn't want to sell and rebuy a hypothetical "more complete" set, this is an easy way to get the new extras. So it's not all bad to do it as a separate release, but including the 12 episodes probably raises the price in Paramount's eyes. Perhaps the included episodes will at least have some different commentary or direct comparisons to the "vault" materials, if they are simply presented "separately" just as they were on the previous releases (with no commentary or direct scene comparison features) I agree it's rather unnecessary to include them at all.

"This rare, long-hidden Star Trek footage would be released in various Blu-ray products under the umbrella title The Roddenberry Vault. The first rollout is expected in the fall, according to Liz Kalodner, exec vp consumer products at CBS."

I'm hoping for the original broadcast versions. If they include the remastered effects I hope that they are optional.

They cannot include the original discs because the episodes are spread accross the seasons. So these will be newly authored discs and hopefully better encodes compared to the original BD sets.

Would be great if deleted scenes could be integrated into the episodes (optional) like they did with The measure of a man on TNG.

Looks like TOS still sells well otherwise these would just be repacks with an additional disc. Fine by me. If DS9 and VOY still isn't an option they could scan the TOS masters in 4K and release them on UHD Blu-ray.

An extended Kirk/Edith Keeler scene and the lost ending to "Who Mourns For Adonais?"
Excellent.
That's a great tease of the lost footage.

This sounds intriguing for sure, but personally I wish they'd just put out a set that contains all the deleted scenes for every episode that they have the footage for all at once. Instead, it sounds like they are doing it this way to milk the fans, small groups of deleted scenes at a time, incorporated into features.

The original Battlestar Galactica series (both the blu-rays and the old DVD set) contained hours of deleted scenes - almost every episode had a bunch of deleted scenes, each set of scenes watchable separately arranged by episode. Hours of additional footage when all added up.
