You're right. Diabolik has CHUD2 and ROTLD3 for $23.99.

...And Family Video has ROTLD 3 for $22.99 (I couldn't find a listing for CHUD II, with or without the periods).

I sent Best Buy an email about it, but not expecting a resulting price change.

I thought the list for these was $40 like Criteirons or (most) Arrows? If they dropped it to $35 then yeah it will probably go lower before release.

List price on the first 3 titles was 39.98, but with ROTLD3 and CHUD II the list price dropped to $34.99 and one would assume this will be the new standard going forward. I'm a bit annoyed that Amazon hasn't hinted at the $24.99 price yet and has stayed firm at $27.99. Considering how long these pre-orders have been available I'm feeling less and less confident that they are going to drop any lower.

I received this utterly inscrutable reply a whopping six days later:

I guess "Princess" thought CHUD II was a video game.

Amazon dropped their price to $24.99, so I had Best Buy price-match over the phone. I did feel a bit ridiculous even saying 'Bud the CHUD' out loud, but I'm willing to embarrass myself to save three bucks! I'm definitely going to be placing all future VV pre-orders through Best Buy as opposed to Amazon, for the reward points as well as receiving the discs a day or two early.

I just received my shipping notice for C.H.U.D. II, which I guess is a good thing.

I was also expecting the retail price to be cheaper than the first three Vestron titles. However, while Lionsgate did lower the MSRP by $5, they kept the cost to retailers the same as the first three Vestron titles. This is why we as consumers did not see lower prices for this and ROTLD 3. Maybe the next wave will be different.

If you want another take, High Def Digest rated it 3.5/5. I personally think that's waaaaaaay too generous.

I'm looking forward to hearing more opinions once this disc is out in the wild.

Without having yet seen the final product myself, I'll take Highdefdigests word over dvdtalk's any day of the week. The folks at HDD generally know what they're talking about and many of their reviewers have been featured in various publications over the years. I have compared their opinions/reviews to my own viewings on numerous occasions and generally agree with their assessments.

That Adam Tyner guy, though, he really knows his stuff! Surely he's an exception, right?

(Full disclosure: I wrote the DVD Talk review. )

(More full disclosure: I'm not actually offended or anything.)

He's never steered me wrong before! (And Hi-Def Digest consistently over-rate discs, I'd take any praise they give with several grains of salt.)

Truth be told you (or anyone) writing a more critical review can be good for releases like this. It dramatically cuts down on the amount of complaints a release see's when it's finally released as it helps to keep expectations in check. I certainly respect your opinion and as I mentioned before I haven't had a chance to view the film just yet so ultimately I may end up agreeing more with you/DVDtalks review in the end anyways. When the HD Wars started I was a very active user in the early days of Highdefdigest and for at least a year or two probably read every single review they published. Since that time I've found myself using this site's reviews as a general basis for what to expect but have reserved final judgement for myself as my equipment and knowledge have improved.

I often forget that folks that frequent this board are involved in every area of film across the world. Fans, reviewers, producers, distributors, etc all seen to drop by from time to time. Thanks for not taking offense to my comments, they weren't meant to be critical and I'm always open to healthy discussion and disagreements around here.

If it's anything like Chopping Mall it's going to be really subjective. Chopping Mall on BD blew the DVD out of the water like a cheap paper boat, but relative to other BDs it still looks kinda bad. So how do you rate that? It's going to depend on the reviewer.

Has anything been mentioned regarding what elements they used for the CHUD II Blu-ray? I'm guessing we'll be seeing a lot of film print-based scans for much of this line. Nothing wrong with that and it won't diminish my enthusiasm one bit but I'm still curious.

Not that I've seen.

FWIW, CHUD II aired on Monsters HD at least as far back as 2005. No idea if this is based on the same master. Unlike Chopping Mall and Blood Diner, there's nothing on the packaging talking about when this was remastered or what types of elements were used.

Just to look at it, I strongly suspect it's an extremely old master, and that the problems aren't (solely, anyway) because of higher generation film elements.
